The "Senhor do Bonfim Urban Renovation" is one of the most significant urban space transformation projects in Salvador da Bahia. The project encompasses three squares: Praça Teodósio Rodrigues de Faria, Largo do Bonfim, and Praça Eusébio de Matos, covering a total area of 36,050 square meters. The site has a total elevation difference of 22 meters, and after the renovation, each level of the site has a different use. The top level is mainly dedicated to religious and cultural venues serving tourists, while the lowest level mainly provides retail, service, and leisure areas for the public.

To enhance the symbolic meaning of the church within its surroundings, the project redefined the square spaces to emphasize the square/church axis. This axis is defined by an imaginary line running vertically through them, which not only expanded the square's area but also created a continuous flow of space from the church down to the various stepped levels, emphasizing the church's importance relative to other buildings and unifying them.

Designed by Sotero Arquitetos, the architects carried out a series of spatial operations at different scales, from small to large, ranging from urban furniture design to traffic infrastructure layout and landscape design. The project's goals focus on the pedestrian experience rather than vehicles, reorganizing the traffic system, and enhancing the symbolic meaning of this religious site.

The roadway and pedestrian walkway are designed at the same level, providing a shared path between vehicles and pedestrians. However, there are eight pedestrian crossings along this route, providing more convenient and direct routes for pedestrians and wheelchairs.

The site and its buildings have been listed as heritage sites by IPHAN (National Institute of Historic and Artistic Heritage) since 1983. It features a large number of facilities, buildings, and public spaces of profound religious significance. Among the new and renewed structures, it is worth highlighting: the chapel of Holy Water (the Holy Water chapel), the chapel of Candles (the Candles chapel), open spaces for celebrations, and the redesign of leisure areas such as the fountain in the main square, stage, dedicated spaces for bars and restaurants, new parking lots, playgrounds, and accessibility features; as well as a new road system, including lanes for taxis, bicycles, public transport, and tourist buses.

The chapel of Holy Water and the chapel of Candles serve to provide visitors access to the Holy Water pool. The texture of the chapels and the lighting effects inside the buildings create a unique sensory experience. The volume has only one frontal opening, which promotes the perception of eternity and sacredness, echoing the monastic cells.

Materials also express the site's history, such as the parallelepiped and Portuguese stone flooring, with a striped combination of black and white stones, evoking the memory of cultural totems, also known as the “Bonfim measure.” It is approximately 45 cm and is used as a template in almost all projects.
