The Trumpf Group, originating in the late 1960s, possesses production workshops and office buildings along the A81 motorway in Germany. Over the past decades, this company has evolved into a successful high-tech enterprise, featuring future-oriented innovative industrial parks, and even developing into an industrial village. In addition to production workshops and administrative buildings, the campus is equipped with a training center, a daycare center, various event spaces serving food, music, lectures, or gatherings, gardens and parks for rest and relaxation, parking lots with spaces for electric vehicles and bicycles, and the newly completed fitness and sports center.

Over time, some plots and existing buildings were successively reclaimed and pieced together to create new spaces, which enabled the core horizontal expansion of the space. As a result, the campus has now reached its horizontal growth limits along the motorway, the city boundary of Ditzingen, and neighboring companies, forcing a strategy of intensive vertical construction.

The completion of the new sports and fitness center marks a shift in the corporate culture of the mechanical engineering company Trumpf. For the company, the new building is a response to the emerging social and spatial needs of employees in a constantly changing work environment, providing an opportunity to create a place firmly rooted in the daily life of the campus while simultaneously promoting social and cultural exchange. The intensive vertical construction strategy (building on top of existing structures) offers a solution and brings a diversified planning layout to the campus.

An unoccupied area on the roof of the logistics center at the southwest end of the campus was acquired to serve as the building site for the new 7,400 m² sports center. The center is located approximately 30 meters above ground level and is accessible via a long external staircase (which also serves as part of the parkour training area) and an elevator for transporting people and goods. The sports center is divided into two zones: a fitness area, yoga area, and classroom area with a foyer and changing rooms, and a gymnasium containing three sports fields to meet the needs of the Trumpf company sports clubs, basketball, football, and badminton teams. The remaining unoccupied roof area is used for extensive planting and also offers the opportunity for panoramic views over the company campus.

To reduce the weight of the roof structure and carbon dioxide emissions, the extension uses a prefabricated timber structure made of simple and economical glued laminated spruce wood, forming a single-story space with a mezzanine. The net span of the trusses in the hall reaches 23.5 meters with a height of 1.2 meters; the span width in the fitness area is correspondingly halved. The glass south facade of the sports and fitness center consists of a continuous double-skin facade (to shield it from the noise of the busy motorway). In addition, the architects supplemented the fitness equipment area with insulating glass layers and sun/wind protection.

The central hall does not use insulating glass; a protective net is used instead. Translucent polycarbonate panels enclose the north-facing spaces, while large sliding doors leading to the roof garden provide fresh air to the gymnasium. Hovering above the motorway and agricultural fields, the sports center acts like an illuminated lantern at night.
