Nan Hwa Dim Light Park is located in the countryside of Pingtung County, Taiwan. The former primary school, once situated under the Dawu Mountain range, has been transformed into the Pingtung Artificial Intelligence Agriculture Center and a new landscape park built for the community and the elderly. By opening the campus boundaries and connecting the new greenery with the surrounding environment, the park creates a more charming and attractive atmosphere for the local residents.

Key Challenges:
Demolishing the original school walls. We negotiated and reached an agreement with the commissioning party and the local government to introduce light to the campus and community by breaking the original boundaries.
Preserving the lush trees on campus. We carefully planned the facilities and structural foundations, considering the original tree roots to allow the trees to remain.
Creating a space for everyone. We designed barrier-free access spaces and eliminated height differences across the entire project site.

Cleverly controlling the mist effect. We studied the wind direction and the design of the mist facilities to create the desired foggy effect. The reborn campus celebrates the natural features of the countryside and transforms them into geometric forms in the landscape design. The curves of the concrete retaining walls echo the patterns of the pineapple fields and the overlapping mountains in the distance. The various selected plants in the park provide an opportunity for public ecological education, including edible plants on the hills and replanted aquatic plants in the ecological pond.

One of our focuses in this project was to develop an irrigation facility where aesthetics and leisure coexist. During the initial three months of the project, we investigated the wind direction and environmental conditions of the site. We collaborated with local suppliers to develop new irrigation facilities to achieve two purposes—1. Provide sufficient moisture for the plants, and 2. Create a misty scene inspired by mountain fog. The fog generation facilities, combined with the lighting system, also ensure safety at night.

The elements of fog and dim light map the collective memory of the locals—at night, the mountain fog flows along the ridges, creating a glow around the streetlights in the distance. The artificial mountain mist flows through the mahogany forest and pineapple fields, recreating the misty scene that evokes the visual memory of looking out at the cloud-shrouded mountains.
