The population of Bamako, the capital of Mali, has increased rapidly in recent years, now exceeding one million, which has created new demands for housing and public facilities. In this context, long-term urban planning is crucial. The government's response was to delineate the boundaries of the Mali National Park, planned on 103 hectares within a 2100-hectare forest reserve, dedicated to forming a significant green belt in this arid country.

Under the terms of a public-private partnership, the government tasked AKTC with focusing on the design of the 103-hectare park, a large, semi-circular protected forest gorge located beneath the stepped escarpments of the Kouriba Plateau, between the National Museum and the Presidential complex. Considering the park's natural attractions, its large scale, and its proximity to the National Museum complex, the park was designed as a large open space for recreation and educational activities for the public, school groups, and tourists. The project required unifying the grounds of the National Museum with the existing botanical and zoological gardens into a single cultural/ecological park of major value with natural and cultural attractions. The first phase included the restoration of 17 hectares of open space and gardens and the construction of some new facilities.

The park has a systematically complete network of pedestrian loops and formal promenades throughout. It incorporates fitness, jogging, cycling, and climbing paths of varying difficulty, as well as paths lined with explanatory signage on the diversity of botany, birds, and nature. The pedestrian network facilitates access for pedestrians throughout the 103-hectare park and connects existing facilities such as the National Museum and the amphitheater, the latter being dedicated to education and performing arts. The first phase also included the rebuilding and integration of eight existing facilities. The architect Diébédo Francis Kéré, winner of the 2004 Aga Khan Award for Architecture, was commissioned to design a primary and secondary school gate, an entrance building, a youth and sports center, a restaurant, public toilets, and several kiosks. The garden spaces are characterized by planting native species in different settings, from open lawn areas to flowerbeds, woodlands, and medicinal gardens. The installation of a series of interpretive educational signs and displays, along with trained guides, is expected to offer a new educational experience for visitors.

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Mali's independence, the National Park of Bamako reopened with new buildings such as an upscale restaurant, a sports center, and several entrance pavilions. The restaurant is situated atop the rock formations, nestled at different heights. The building is divided into four cubes representing different functions. Our constant concern was how to integrate the spectacular views of the park and the nearby lake into the design. The same architectural language was adopted for the Sports Center, as exemplified by the restaurant. It consists of three pavilions surrounding an oval playground. These buildings are positioned in such a way that they provide maximum shading to the playground and the internal recreational spaces. Here, the relationship between interior and exterior spaces played an important role in the design.

The building entrances interpret the architectural style of the restaurant and the sports center. In this way, the combination of different building complexes creates a unique and recognizable architectural presence for the park through a shared design language and material selection.

All buildings are clad externally with local natural stone, a practice that reinforces local character and saves on construction costs. The external stone walls provide natural insulation and adaptation for the interior spaces. Large overhanging roofs cast shade over the exterior walls, creating a pleasant indoor climate. For more specific rooms, such as the dining hall in the restaurant, air conditioning is anticipated. In these cases, the gap between the massive walls and the roof is closed with louvers.
