From the Second World War onwards, this park was an undeveloped brownfield site used for storing construction materials, temporary events, and annual circus performances—essentially chaotic. Due to its proximity to Garibaldi Station and being surrounded by busy traffic, the soil eventually became severely contaminated.

Four times—the City of Milan organized four competitions to revitalize this land, but no proposal was ever realized. This continued until the Inside Outside team emerged in 2003, insisting on the necessity of implementing this winning park design from 2009 onwards! The Municipality of Milan became our client, and later, the developer Manfredi Catella joined in.

Objectives of the Intervention
“Biblioteca degli Alberi” (Library of Trees) is a new form of public park—serving as an urban connector, cultural ground, sports field, and botanical garden; simultaneously functioning as a permeable cover for important underground infrastructure nodes. Design collaborators for the park included Michael Maltzan, Mirko Zardini, Piet Oudolf, Irma Boom, and Studio Giorgetta.

Design Description
The park showcases 23 different tree species, each organized into circular compositions, known as the “circular forests,” distributed throughout the park. Each tree is described and named, compiled into text integrated along the paths.

Once the tree circles mature, their dense foliage will form canopies, turning into “plant pavilions” equipped with various facilities for sports, games, and leisure; the spatial structure provides shade for multiple uses. Straight paths cut across the park, connecting the landscape nodes and surrounding areas, creating a multi-centered grid system.

This “path network” creates an irregular collage, a series of distinct garden types. The planting in each area has been carefully selected—along with the biotope pond and trees—to create a dynamic, all-season environment of high biodiversity. For the parking area around Fondazione Catella, we designed a special curtain-like fence to avoid disturbing the park's structure. The main composition of this park is the “canopy garden,” where trees and garden types are strategically placed to ensure the longevity of the plants.

Evaluation
The park’s design positions it as an interface and connection between the surrounding different communities: the City Hall, major public transport hubs, commercial areas, busy streets, and quiet residential areas (such as “Quartiere Isola”). The regeneration of the park has added indispensable infrastructure connections, promoting smoother traffic flow and efficient pedestrian communication. A main road previously adjacent to the park now passes beneath it, significantly reducing traffic noise.

With its diverse functional content—play, sports, leisure, cultural activities—the Biblioteca degli Alberi park becomes the beating heart of the area. It provides opportunities for the numerous newly developed commercial and residential buildings nearby to use it as an outdoor space for meeting and contemplation.

The process of preparing and realizing the park took ten years; the strategic quality of the design—employing simple elements and clearly defined spaces—has proven its resilience to adapt to different needs and adjustments without losing its strength, always maintaining the essence of the original concept.
