The various nodes of the West Bund waterfront public space were successively opened after transformation and upgrading in 2022. Since the official opening, the record for the highest single-day visitor volume has reached 40,000, making it a truly must-visit waterfront destination in Shanghai and the most beloved urban public space for its citizens. A healing, relaxing, and resting urban green living room has emerged before people's eyes, making the once-isolated and alienated "human-water relationship" intimate and integrated. Our client, West Bund Group, has always been committed to creating a more pleasant, interesting, and accessible space for the public. In early 2021, Hassell was commissioned by the West Bund Group to undertake design work for a series of waterfront projects along the 11.4-kilometer stretch of the Huangpu River's west bank in Shanghai. The West Bund, once the birthplace of China's national industry in the 20th century and the host of the 2010 World Expo, has transformed from a production-oriented shoreline to a living shoreline, making a magnificent transition into a highly valuable open space in a high-density city.

"Landscape is not just about presenting beautiful spaces, but also about creating a vessel for harmonious relationships between people and nature, and between people themselves. We are very pleased that Hassell brought this concept to us, and together we have transformed and upgraded a series of nodes along the Xuhui Riverside, creating a beautiful waterfront life shared by everyone through respecting the site, caring for the needs, and inspiring communication."
The design team integrated four types of waterfront service spaces—cultural venues, commercial facilities, independent architecture, and temporary installations—and highlighted the symbiotic relationship between green space and buildings through four dimensions: humanization, recognizability, shareability, and vitality. Designers considered the usage scenarios of different communities in the public space to establish connections between the place and nature. People picnic, gather, or seek solitude on the lawn, exert themselves on the basketball court, savor the mellow aroma by the Flower Stream Valley, skate happily in the skate park, and move freely along the riverside running track.

Little painters express their imagination on the "River Table," inspired by the concept of "Gathering at the River," while they learn about the mother river of their city through the rubbings on the table—a scene the designers were delighted to witness. As people slow their pace walking past the small garden of an Italian restaurant, the story wall of the underground world makes them pause. Are the small creatures inside the wall also happily enjoying their feast? The designers' efforts to establish a connection between people and nature through imagination have become a reality. Users are also utilizing the space in novel and unique ways, fully enjoying the transformed riverside metropolis. Furthermore, the West Bund waterfront space serves as a benchmark project for more sustainable operation and low-cost construction on site. During the project renovation, the low-maintenance landscape planting approach greatly reduced the required maintenance costs for the entire area. Additionally, the design successfully repurposed demolished building materials in an innovative way, reducing the demand for new materials and contributing to a lower-carbon outcome with a more positive impact on the community and environment. This recycling and highly site-sensitive management approach is key to the broader sustainable operating model of the entire waterfront public space.

Hassell aims to inspire, educate, and demonstrate leadership in long-term sustainable design. In the transformation along the West Bund, we strived to retain the existing mature trees and structures on the site, thus preserving precious memories associated with the place while practicing the concept of sustainable development in design. During the upgrade process, the project team had to deal with a series of challenges, especially the threats of typhoons and floods every year. We maximized the retention of existing trees for their stable root systems to resist natural disasters. Simultaneously, we carefully selected plant species around the flood control walls and within the high platform areas to adapt to extremely harsh weather. These plants, highly adaptable to seasonal changes, create a richly varied and poetically dynamic natural landscape for people living in the urban environment, painting a picture of undulating clouds swaying and trembling with light and wind in the unique microclimate of the waterfront.
