The site, a brownfield in the suburbs of Nanjing, was restored through a garden expo and subsequently transformed into a tourist resort after the exhibition.
The project base is a large quarry pit within this brownfield, planned as a tourism complex with a theme of regenerated quarry, incorporating a hotel, botanical garden, restaurants, coffee shops, and an outdoor theater.
The challenge of landscape design not only originated from the severely damaged natural environment of the quarry pit but also from the complexity of the project functions and goals.

The botanical garden is the core of the project, and its roof is a giant transparent pool supported by 42 tall, tree-shaped stainless steel structural columns.
Through analysis of lighting conditions, moisture conditions, and soil cover feasibility, landscape architects determined three different habitat zones: arid, mesic, and hydric.
The arid garden cleverly combines 67 steps and a total length of 86m of zigzag ramps through staggered rock terraces, where drought-tolerant and nutrient-poor plants of various shapes and colors grow.

The mesic garden creates rich spatial variations through undulating hills, deep valleys, and steep rocks, providing suitable growing environments for different plants.
A winding sky bridge connects the second floor of the commercial building with the rockery and viewing platform in the garden, offering a unique experience of traversing above the treetops and a vantage point overlooking the garden.

To preserve the memory of the original quarry, the Mist Garden adopted a partial restoration method, restoring vegetation only in a series of scattered island-like areas, while the gravel surface of the quarry remnants was retained in other areas.
The south cliff face of the quarry, over 130 meters high, was preserved to serve as a natural backdrop for performances and a screen for light shows.
