In the heart of the Colombian Eastern Andes lies a piece of Colombian history. The Centenario Park, located in the downtown area of Bucaramanga (Santander, Colombia), was built in 1910 to commemorate the centenary of Colombian independence. This important public space on the plateau borders protected buildings such as the Centro Cultural del Oriente and the recently restored Teatro Santander. However, over the last three decades, the park gradually deteriorated environmentally, affected by urban violence and the spread of crime, coupled with a lack of facilities to promote physical and mental well-being.

Its poor environmental comfort and lack of security led to the gradual abandonment of the park. On the other hand, there was a previous unfinished project for an underground parking lot. To address these challenges, the design team adopted an innovative, creative, and collaborative procedure, recovering 10,500 square meters of space, directly benefiting nearly sixty thousand residents of the municipality and the city.

Through a co-creation process, numerous neighbors formed alliances with public and civil organizations; at the same time, several marginalized, immigrant, and/or minority groups, coming from different time zones, gathered here. People of different ages and genders, along with a techno-social interdisciplinary team, made decisions before, during, and after the intervention. The renovated park features new squares, multi-purpose rooms, and other settings for sharing and celebrating civic, especially cultural activities, and promoting inclusivity for creative and artistic expression. The plan involved an area of more than 100,000 square meters, with the entire process being carried out in phases.

In terms of construction, urban furniture has been integrated into the existing tree landscape within the park, where people rest and socialize collectively. A water jet system has been incorporated into the central lighting system, which regulates the space's temperature in extreme heat and highlights the natural beauty of the park.

Recycled materials were used for the ground base and sub-base, and natural stone finishes from a nearby quarry were incorporated, while water saving is sensually promoted through the play of mirrors and colors around the only presidential statue in the former area, located in the central area of the park.

The renovation of the Centenario Park has recovered and redefined the tangible and intangible cultural heritage of the area. It is now an attractive public space where residents can share, recreate, learn, and rest.
