From the architect. What is special about the Luisenpark is that the landscape elements allow the building structure to recede into the background. Therefore, in the design, the new building does not appear in the traditional sense of an architectural form, but rather as a single-story pavilion with organic shapes that blend into the surrounding park environment.

An elegantly curved roof structure rests on slender supports, covering a floor-to-ceiling glazed interior space, creating a smooth transition between inside and outside. Refined, shimmering dark green glazed ceramic elements frame the adjacent room areas. The flat profile of the slender eaves slides under the outstretched branches of the trees. The surrounding canopy provides shade and protection from the rain for park visitors.

The curved roof structure, approximately 120 meters long and 30 meters wide, connects the various functional areas of the building. At the southern end, the new park restaurant welcomes visitors in a welcoming manner. The dining area, enclosed by a curved glass facade, overlooks the nearby Kutzerweiher pond. In summer, large sliding doors can be opened, extending the restaurant area under the projecting canopy.

To the north of the restaurant is an adjacent walk-in free-flight aviary, for which a 1,300 square meter opening was created in the roof slab. The aviary is covered by an 18-meter-high steel cable mesh structure supported by 3 pillars. The path that visitors take through the aviary passes an artificial landscape that includes a watercourse and two ponds. The northern end of the roof houses the buildings for animal feeding and care.

Ground floor plan
Slightly offset from the main roof, a 580 square meter penguin enclosure was built, whose outline also follows the dynamic curved design language. The landscape here is shaped by a mix of natural granite and artificial rock. A 250 cubic meter pool was built for the penguins, allowing visitors to observe them both above and below water.

The terrain drops four meters towards the Kutzerweiher pond, a drop that is retained by a rammed earth wall, which extends in a gentle curve along the edge of the pond. Due to its porosity and clearly visible layered rammed earth structure, it is reminiscent of the stratification of a quarry, thus transforming this wall from an architectural structural element into a landscape element.

Visitors enter the polygonal underwater world from the pond shore through a deep cut in the rammed earth wall. Here, the sand-colored floor has been intentionally only polished, the walls coated with a slightly shimmering scraped-sand finish, and the ceiling painted dark blue. This creates a mineral-influenced, contemplative space where 21 aquariums display fish from all continents.

The implementation of this ensemble gives the Luisenpark a new and unique face and creates an iconic architectural effect for the Federal Garden Show (BUGA 2023). In the second construction phase, the complex will be further expanded with the Green School and the Leisure House.
