This project features a 250-square-meter immersive lounge-like space, designed to immerse visitors in a 360-degree natural experience within one of Seoul's busiest recreational areas, Ttukseom Hangang Park. This three-dimensional naturalistic garden enhances public engagement and provides a tranquil sanctuary where visitors can disconnect from the overstimulation of artificial visuals and reconnect with nature. The project is intended to be seen not merely as a static relic, but as a distinctive topography that guides plant thriving.

The garden is inspired by the spatial structures and interactions observed in nature, creating multi-layered, intimate spaces. By incorporating perennial plants and herbs that exhibit years of change, color, texture, and structure, these principles are applied at the human scale. The design evokes a symbiotic relationship between the natural and the artificial through continuous interaction across five layers spanning 400 meters, seamlessly integrating with the existing landscape.

Project Context - The "Immersive Resilience Garden" is the first public realm project built in Seoul by architect and professor Changyeob Lee, following his over ten-year career in London, upon his return to his hometown. The project was selected and built by the Seoul Metropolitan Government for the 2024 International Horticulture Exposition through an international competition. The project will remain after the official event concludes on October 8th of this year.

Details - The garden is inspired by how bees, beetles, and butterflies interact with nature in a three-dimensional way to sustain the garden. The layered structure of the petals creates a sense of enclosure for the insects, allowing them to escape the artificial urban environment. We studied this interaction between non-humans and nature and applied the spatial principles to our human-scaled project.

The garden is divided into three layers, each planted with different species: a tall Group A, a medium Group B, and a low Group C. Large plants arranged around the perimeter will eventually grow to human height over time. The lifecycle of the perennial herbs is respected, and as seasons change, the garden will present an even deeper and lusher appearance. The garden not only invites people to stop and appreciate but also encourages them to enter, explore, and interact with the natural world. It offers an immersive resilient experience that captures the visitors' attention and encourages them to linger.

Garden and Sustainability - By selecting perennial plant species, the project promotes sustainability by offering diverse natural scenery throughout the year without reliance on artificial irrigation. This self-sustaining growth supports biodiversity, creates a healthier microclimate, and improves the quality of life for residents in busy urban areas.

Construction Process - Given the limited budget for public projects in Korea, we actively utilized computational design to improve the constructability of irregular shapes. Curves were carefully optimized and segmented using computers to minimize material waste within the constraints of standard sheet metal sizes. Approximately 400 custom metal units were fitted with individual part numbers and cut into shapes suitable for custom joints, allowing for easy assembly and welding in a factory setting. We achieved efficient transportation via 5-meter-long prefabricated sections, which reduced the need for on-site labor. Through these integrated technical efforts, we were able to complete this unprecedented project within the confines of the project's limited budget.
