The Pazhou Central Business District (CBD) in Guangzhou is China's first integrated core area combining a "Technology CBD + Bay Area TOD." From the initial urban planning stages, the landscape system was positioned as green infrastructure, connecting the future CBD core, transportation hubs, residential areas, and the Huangpu River channel, while simultaneously mitigating the urban heat island effect. The 300-meter long, 4-hectare Pazhou South Waterfront Park restored the natural waterfront landscape that was previously a hard embankment, extending the ecological corridor into the city. The park merges natural imagery, ecological restoration, and urban lifestyles, bringing accessible waterfront experiences and public open spaces into this rapidly developing CBD core area.

Located along the Huangpu River, adjacent to the Pazhou CBD, the Pazhou Waterfront Park draws its design inspiration from the natural mountainous topography of Guangzhou. The site features a height difference of over 4 meters from the urban interface down to the waterfront. The design sculpts expressive, organic landforms to dissolve the harshness of the original linear, engineered embankment, reintroducing natural experiences and ecological habitats into the urban core. Diverse topography creates rich spatial experiences—valleys, hills, plains, and waterfronts—which are cleverly integrated with different open space functions. As a vital piece of green infrastructure for the Pazhou CBD core, the park offers the community a valuable opportunity to reconnect with nature and the water.

Reshaping the Hard Embankment - Based on a thorough understanding of flood control requirements, the design softens the original hard, linear embankment structure by introducing organic topography and winding waterfront paths. Through meticulous arrangement of functional spaces and planting schemes, the design accommodates and embraces the dynamic changes in natural water levels, achieving an organic integration of landscape, people, and water. The layout of the terrain and pathways was carefully considered to maximize the retention of the fourteen lush, mature trees along the original waterfront.

Plans

On the east side of the park, an elevated walkway traverses rolling green valleys and forests, connecting to a water plaza. Surrounded by dense vegetation, this plaza creates a refreshing space for summer activities. This plaza can temporarily drain to transform into a waterfront stage for various public events. The overhead walkway extends towards the water, forming a central viewing platform that overlooks the Canton Tower and the city skyline, becoming a new waterfront landmark and urban vantage point.

Enhancing Waterfront Natural Ecology - By transforming the original embankment into a vegetated, gentle slope, the park achieves a natural connection with the existing tidal flats. The design team collaborated with local ecological experts to thoroughly study existing plant species and meticulously analyze the dynamic water level variations along the waterfront, ranging from the lowest tide level of +3.50m to the 20-year flood level of +7.12m. Different types of aquatic and riparian plants are planted according to the water level distribution, gradually restoring and enhancing the natural ecological habitats along the riverbank.
