This project is located on a lakeside platform in Huaqiao Central Park, Kunshan, Jiangsu. The original site was an old sunshade pavilion. Despite its advantageous geographical location, it has been neglected for a long time due to its limited functionality. We hope to bring this space to life through a lightweight and flexible design intervention, making it a place where people are willing to stop.

From "machines" to "moving" architecture
Early modernist architecture was often referred to as "living machines", emphasizing clear functionality and rational form.. In this project, we prefer the building to be "alive" - it can respond proactively based on time, weather, and usage needs. For this purpose, we have designed a retractable box building: during business hours, its walls can slide, flip, and rise, fully opening up the interior space and attracting people to approach and stay; And when closed or not in use, it can be folded into a quiet volume.
This kind of opening and closing change is not only for functional needs, but also a way of spatial expression: making the building more like a part of the urban rhythm, rather than a fixed and unchanging object. When people pass by it, they can see at a glance that it is an "open" moment, and the building seems to have the ability to perceive time.

Dialogue with the venue and create gray space images
We did not design this small house as a closed box, but as much as possible integrated with the venue, making it like an existence willing to "open itself".. By folding door panels, sliding facades, and translucent materials, we have created many gray spaces that blur the boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces - they can both provide shade and shelter from rain, while allowing wind and light to pass through. The shading and seating system on the opposite side of the building also interacts with the building, forming an open and inclusive space together. The retractable design of the sunshade system enhances the flexibility of the space, providing a comfortable environment for different time periods and activities. This makes the originally closed volume open and interactive, and also enriches people's possibilities for use here: from waiting for coffee, sightseeing, to temporary markets and activity spaces, buildings are no longer just "objects", but "interfaces" for life to occur.

Lightweight construction and sustainable ideas picture
In order to minimize interference with the original platform, the project adopts a light steel structure system, covered with aluminum panels, and laid with bamboo and wood materials on the ground.. The main structure is an integral fixed structure that cannot be disassembled to ensure long-term stability and durability; At the same time, the adjustable interface system of the facade allows it to present diverse states in different operating scenarios, seasonal changes, and lighting conditions. This construction strategy of "stable skeleton+variable skin" not only extends the life cycle of buildings, but also endows them with the ability to continuously adapt and respond in urban environments. We hope it is not only a functional space, but also a spatial framework that can be continuously used and activated.

A place image that can be redefined
We call it "flower box coffee", but it is far more than just a coffee shop and flower shop.. It can be a hot drink you encounter on your journey, a break for taking your child to sit down and watch the water, the starting point of a weekend floral market, and a small gathering place for friends to chat. It has no clear functional boundaries, and it is precisely this ambiguity that allows users to freely define it. Here, fragrance, light and shadow, and water interweave into a soft corner of the city. We hope it is not a 'completed building', but a living container that can constantly change with people's use.

Small scale, light intervention, high-energy images
We hope to explore the possibility of small-scale intervention in cities through "flower box coffee" - embedding light and flexible strategies into daily life, starting from details, reactivating the site in use, and promoting real connections between people and nature, and between people.. We believe that the significance of architecture lies not only in its grand scale and spectacular form, but also in a small box that can be opened, breathed in, and participate in life, allowing it to continuously respond to the needs of the environment and users over time, and become a part of the city's public memory.
