This project is located in the old urban area of Xicheng District, Beijing, adjacent to the west side of Baita Temple. It is a 105 square meter coffee bakery renovation project. The residential area and commercial space in this area are intertwined, creating a unique atmosphere full of vitality. The square in front of the venue is the core of the area, not only providing a public space for people to gather, but also offering a view of the White Pagoda Temple. The key to design lies in how to balance the relationship between the site and the White Pagoda Temple, as well as how to establish a sense of place in a broader urban context. In recent years, under the promotion of the government, the Baita Temple area has undergone large-scale urban renewal. The former courtyard has been transformed into cafes, shops, and restaurants, injecting new vitality and attracting a large number of visitors.

Nowadays, this place has become one of the important birthplaces of Beijing Citywalk culture, with crowds surging and showing vigorous vitality. Based on this background, we hope to create a space that can carry this vitality and continuity. Starting from the experience of strolling through hutongs, passing through lively squares, extending indoors, and then leading to rooftop terraces, the design creates a natural and smooth spatial flow, allowing people to immerse themselves in coffee culture from different levels and perspectives, while experiencing the historical heritage of the community.

In the end, a multi-level coffee space that extends from the square to the interior and leads to a rooftop terrace emerged. It not only connects the city and architecture, but also allows people to perceive the pulse of the city in their walking experience, capturing the subtle balance between new and old, dynamic and static.

Strolling through the alley, a large stainless steel facade comes into view. The facade is centered around the pedestrian's line of sight height, with a gradient treatment from mirror to frosted, creating a unique light and shadow variation. Pedestrians come in a continuous stream, occasionally capturing themselves or the scene of the square in reflections, forming interesting visual interactions. Passing through the stainless steel facade, the large glass windows reflect the entire interior space of the store. The glass facade slightly retreats from the square, cleverly creating a semi outdoor space while also providing rain shelter.

People sit here, gaze out at the square, and enjoy a moment of tranquility. Stainless steel elements continue from the exterior to the interior, integrating the bread display area, cash register, and kitchen. The height and shape of the ground stone have been adjusted according to the changes in functional areas, progressing layer by layer from the square through the semi outdoor space to the deepest part of the interior, enhancing the fluidity and layering of the space. At the deepest part of the store, the step seating area is surrounded by large plants, and the skylight introduces the sky view and abundant natural light, making the space transparent and vibrant. The ground, green plants, vast sky, and interplay of light and shadow allow people to feel the comfortable atmosphere of the outdoors even indoors.

Step outside through the exit next to the seat on the stairs, climb up the stairs, and the spiral staircase leads directly to the rooftop terrace. The magnificent scenery of Baita Temple can be seen at a glance, and the urban network interwoven with squares and hutongs can be seen at a glance. The rooftop seating area features a sculptural "white tower" made of the same material as the indoor stone, standing still in the center of the space. Customers can taste bread and coffee around it. At the same time, this new "White Pagoda" also blends into the square landscape, complementing the distant White Pagoda Temple and creating a unique urban landscape.

The entire space is dominated by white and gray tones, which not only echo the colors of the White Pagoda Temple, but also form a sharp contrast with the displayed bread. White and light gray stones extend from the outdoor floor to the deepest interior walls, each with a unique texture that responds to the stainless steel volume inserted into the square. The original three wooden structural columns in the space were designed in a sculptural form, hiding their original structure. They contrast with the simple and unified ground stone and stainless steel volume, enhancing the sense of hierarchy in the space and attracting the attention of square pedestrians. The frosted acrylic light box installed on the ceiling extends from outdoors to indoors, blurring the boundaries of the space and illuminating the gray brick walls of the exterior walls and the entire interior space. The exterior wall is equipped with irregular rectangular windows, whose random shape attracts the attention of pedestrians, forming a visual focus, and also echoing the sculptural columns inside, emphasizing the unity of space and sculptural sense, giving the place stronger artistic expression.

This design respects the intangible power and time imprint contained in historical sites, and considers how to fit modern lifestyles to shape new spatial forms. It is crucial to blur the boundaries between architecture, the city, and the surrounding environment, so that the space can naturally blend into the urban texture and become an organic part of it. We hope that this blend of old and new environments can not only continue the thickness of history, but also become a part of the city, endowing it with new scenery and vitality.
