As part of the Memorial's long-term evolution concept, the new entrance design addresses the need to improve accessibility, clarity, and capacity, while respecting the historical weight carried by the site. Situated on a strong radial axis between Parliament House and Mount Ainslie according to Walter Burley Griffin's Master Plan, the Memorial's national significance is emphasized. The new entrance reinforces this spatial order by strengthening visual connections, ritual pathways, and providing clear wayfinding for visitors.

The project is structured around three key architectural elements that organize movement and imbue the space with deep meaning. The Focus Hub aligns the arrival sequence with the Hall of Memory, Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and the Pool of Reflection, situating visitors at the symbolic core of the Memorial. Radial geometry in the Directional Walls intuitively guides movement, while the Boundary Wall frames the Parade Ground, providing a solemn and protective edge that reinforces the site’s gravitas. Together, these elements create a clear yet measured portal, balancing openness with reverence.

At the heart of the new entrance is the Oculus, a space and symbol inspired by the dome of the Hall of Memory. Bronze-clad ribs and custom glazing filter natural light into the space below, creating shifting patterns of light and shadow that encourage visitors to pause and reflect. Light, movement, and materiality work in concert to align the architectural experience with the solemn purpose of the Memorial, offering moments of quiet contemplation within a public setting.

Material choices emphasize continuity and permanence. Locally sourced sandstone integrates the new structure with the existing fabric of the Memorial, while exposed concrete imparts a sense of timelessness and resilience. Bronze detailing and timber accents introduce warmth and tactility, softening the experience and supporting human-scale interaction. Indigenous landscape planting extends the relationship between building and setting, reinforcing the Memorial’s connection to its environment.
