The global reputation of Oxford’s humanities has driven the ambition for the project: to elevate models of learning while pursuing environmental and social sustainability and inclusivity. The centre is certified as the largest passive-energy building project in England and the world’s first passive-energy concert hall. As the first university building in Oxford to open to the public, it conveys an attitude of openness to the wider citizenry.

The layout was formed through extensive consultation with scholars, librarians, students, and staff. Seven humanities departments, seven libraries from the Bodleian, the Oxford Internet Institute, and the newly established Institute for Ethics in Artificial Intelligence—previously scattered across 26 buildings—are now brought together in a central location opposite the Radcliffe Observatory. This physical proximity of scholarship is intentionally designed to encourage cross-disciplinary collaboration and exchange.

At the core of this fundamental driver for collaboration in scholarship and outreach are the humanities cultural programme, centred on a world-class 500-seat concert hall, supported by three other performance venues and exhibition and film spaces. This creates a virtuous cycle of ‘research as performance’ and ‘performance as research’, strengthening the ties between the University and the City.

Design emphasis is placed on openness. Public routes through the building avoid traditional ingress barriers and are punctuated by public spaces of varying scale and character. The centrepiece is the grand Great Hall, a four-storey atrium with departmental entrances to its four sides and learning pods above, lit by a domed timber and glass oculus. The Hall is flexible for exhibitions, lectures, performances, or banqueting, echoing Oxford’s traditional civic ‘rooms’ and recalling Hawksmoor’s original vision for a university forum.

Below, the performance spaces cluster around a foyer that doubles as a space for informal activity. Adjacent to the Concert Hall is a 250-seat theatre, a black-box experimental space, rehearsal facilities, and music studios. Together, these extend Oxford’s cultural reach, attracting chamber ensembles that might not typically place Oxford on a touring schedule and encouraging a diversity of artistic expression from opera to electronic performance.

Architecturally, the 25,300 sq m building mediates its scale through structures of smaller Clipsham stone and brick, carefully articulated to respond to the highly varied surroundings while still denoting a formal entrance. Colonnades, landscaping, and exterior ‘rooms’ blur the boundary between building and city. Internally, carefully crafted details provide a contemporary response to the materials of historic colleges, balancing modern prefabrication techniques with durability, tactility, and gravitas.
