The project is located on a bowl-shaped contour site in Peermade, Kerala, India, surrounded by beautiful scenery. The site has a height difference of about 1 meter to 4 meters, extending down into a deep valley. The natural landscape adds beauty to this place filled with banana trees and other vegetation. The weather here is mostly foggy, with continuous rain for 9 months a year. Therefore, a small drainage pipe passes through the site to help guide natural drainage.

We are excited by the experimental attempts in architectural design, which also help us learn better. This experimental inspiration comes from my architectural mentor, Ar. Vinu Daniel. We designed an experimental thin-shell vault structure as a cow shed on the slope, based on the catenary vault structure of my mentor Ar. Senthil Kumar Doss, who is a pioneer of thin-shell vaults in India and supervised the overall project execution.

The idea for building the vault for the cow shed was to use locally available materials to reduce costs, achieving sustainability in its own way without using steel or concrete. Reclaimed members, casuarina, and bamboo were used for structural support. The four anchor points of the vault are located at different heights of 0m, 0.70m, and 2.1m, defining the ground plane within the site. The catenary vaults at four different heights create an eternal experience under the shed, constructed from three layers of 25mm thick "Sithu kal" (small bricks), all of which can be found within a 40km radius nearby.

This vault is a purely compressive structure, and the foundation is designed according to the forces transferred by the structure, making it stable. The shape of the structure follows the natural landform, so that the natural landscape and trees are not disturbed, thus hiding in nature. No natural landform was removed, and the structure was built considering the slope and the surrounding environment.

Furthermore, considering the strong winds and rainfall at the site, the openings in the vault are designed to help guide rainwater towards the deep valley. The structure is derived from the Kangaroo physics engine, considering the site surface and applying loads to generate maximum elasticity of the surface, making it a stable compressive structure. The existing drainage pipe is retained to drain rainwater through the building. Despite the challenges faced during construction due to heavy rains and the steep slope, the construction took a total of 3 months.
