The Red Lantern Under a Grand Roof: Memory of an era, culture of a place—architecture is an indispensable part. We hope to use the language of architecture to showcase traditional Chinese culture to the world through the grand Asian Games event. The design inspiration comes from the most common folk object, the "Red Lantern," which symbolizes reunion and festivity, and has long become one of the cultural symbols for the Chinese people. Taking the "Red Lantern" as the archetype, creating a cricket field with Hangzhou charm is our congratulatory message to the Hangzhou Asian Games. "Following nature's materials, adapting to local conditions," we do not wish the intervention of architecture to disturb the original order of the site; only architecture rooted in regional context can achieve an organic unity between the building and nature. Red brick is an architectural language imbued with emotional memory, which has been condensed over decades into the unique "Gongda Red." We adopt the classic red brick (terracotta brick) of the university and extend it to the spatial form and function of the building, maximizing the integration of the architecture with the campus's cultural heritage and historical legacy. In the spirit of "great skill appearing clumsy," red brick has been used to this day; its ancient simplicity and heavy texture, along with its natural, rough surface, can reflect the sedimentation of humanistic history on the building facade. Simultaneously, the building constructs a "grand roof," combining the original four-slope roof form of the campus with the changing angles around the plot to create exaggerated, sharp, cantilevered eaves. The overhanging eaves follow the curvature of the cricket field, creating rich under-eave spaces. Furthermore, the roof surface is designed with a sloped texture to achieve a visually light and vanishing effect.

Fuchun Landscape in Terracotta Bricks: The design is centered on "ecological aesthetics," drawing inspiration from the "Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains" scroll. Through architectural elements and language, as well as the analysis and interpretation of traditional landscape painting, the lines and angles of the mountains are deconstructed and then reassembled in the architecture, seeking a poetic space for dialogue and contemplation with nature, thereby rebuilding a contemporary indigenous Chinese architectural practice. The building surface features a double-layer structure, with a unique "brick curtain wall" on the outside, separated by 1.8 meters from the inner wall. Utilizing the high strength of terracotta bricks, the main brick dimensions chosen are 60mm×480mm×120mm and 60mm×720mm×120mm. Each terracotta brick is perforated with multiple circular holes and fixed by threading stainless steel pipes through them, ensuring safety and ease of construction. Furthermore, by assembling two types of perforations, 240mm×240mm and 120mm×120mm, the design simulates mountains in the near and far views. Through parametric design techniques, the arrangement of the openings is simulated based on required daylighting levels, perfectly integrating the "Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains" with the internal functional needs. The porous "brick shell," rotating walls, and gaps minimize the cricket field's intrusiveness into the campus space, while cleverly utilizing natural light and shadow variations to reinterpret nature and recreate the Fuchun landscape.

Post-Asian Games Symbiosis of Sustainable Architecture: Based on a sports building for the Asian Games within a campus setting, greater emphasis should be placed on its multiple possibilities within the campus context, integrating it into the entire campus life from a forward-looking perspective. At the same time, the concept of sharing and openness should run through the entire life cycle of the building, enabling it to serve as a bond connecting culture and life, thus conferring the unique public service value inherent in sports architecture. This building is designed for a full life cycle and multi-functional use. During the Asian Games, the field will be used for cricket matches and broadcasts; after the Asian Games, the building will continue to serve as a center for various university activities, serving both the school and the community. After the event, the original first-floor competition functions and outdoor venues will be retained to meet physical education needs and serve sporting activities. Furthermore, the multiple meeting and reception halls and lecture halls inside the building will be repurposed as the university's conference center and theater after the games.

The main building and the spectator stand on the east side enclose a 12-meter-wide inner street, cleverly opening up public space and organically linking it with the university campus. After the games, this area will be converted into a pedestrian street, becoming a student creative center. The obliquely inserted second-floor platform connects the two spectator stands on the east and west sides, and landscape steps are set up at the four corners of the stands, providing spaces for teachers and students to study, communicate, relax, and enjoy the view. Furthermore, the Asian Games Cricket Field is not just a physical space, but also our contemplation on the design of sports architecture under the new era's new development concepts: how to empower the city through sports and assist in the construction of a healthy city, fully implementing the requirement from the 20th National Congress to accelerate the building of a strong sports nation. We hope that the experience gained from the construction of this cricket field can become an "Asian Games Legacy" for the construction of Hangzhou Asian Games venues.
