HEMAA, founded in 2018 by Charles Hesters and Pierre Martin-Saint-Etienne, operates on the principles of grounding designs in the living world, focusing on environmental integration and material sobriety. Each project begins with a detailed interpretation of its surroundings, seeking a balance between nature, functionality, and materials. In Évry-Courcouronnes, within the Greater Paris area, the Parc des Loges Childhood and Sports Center perfectly embodies this approach: built with materials of biological and geological origin, the structure features a soft, landscape-like layout, creating an open, generous, and sustainable public facility.

Rooted in a Deep Architectural Tradition

The project blends perfectly with the natural topography of the site, following the slope without the need for artificial modifications. Five functional zones—nursery school, primary school, daycare center, cafeteria, and sports stands—are arranged around a central garden courtyard, isolating them from street noise while embracing the landscape. These autonomous building volumes are connected by delicate glass walkways that introduce natural light, ensure visual transparency, and establish a close connection with the living environment. The facades feature load-bearing rammed earth walls, while the interior frames are entirely made of wood, echoing the materials of a park lodge.

First Floor Plan

Footpaths wind among newly planted trees, naturally extending the school into the park. The children's garden transforms into a tamed forest populated by oaks, ash, maple, and elm trees, punctuated by clearings left free for children to play spontaneously. Inspired by the concept of the forest kindergarten, the project offers a vision of learning that is both playful and immersed in nature—deeply rooted in the natural and living world.

Sober and Elementary Materiality

The entire project adheres to stringent ecological standards. The 665 cubic meters of load-bearing rammed earth used for the facades (equivalent to 1330 m² of 50 cm thick walls) were sourced from the earth excavated for the Greater Paris subway tunnels. These walls are insulated with hemp-wool, preserving the natural breathability of the rammed earth. Green roofs (with a 15–20 cm substrate layer) enhance thermal comfort and aid in natural water management. Adjustable sunscreens and deep roof overhangs naturally modulate solar exposure. The building orientation is cleverly designed to capture winter sun while promoting natural ventilation in summer. Diverse vegetation helps mitigate the urban heat island effect and enhances local biodiversity.

Wood and rammed earth together shape a building that is both soft and grounded, with simple, clear geometries. In this working-class neighborhood, where many children cannot leave the city during holidays, the children's center is intended to be a place for both learning and leisure. Rammed earth—a lively, breathable material—invites children to touch it, offering a unique growing environment for children raised in a city of reinforced concrete. Warm and tactile wood defines the interior spaces and structure. The base uses low-carbon textured concrete, punctuated by glass panels at children's eye level (60 cm), ensuring both durability and the introduction of natural light while fostering a sense of intimacy.

Shared Public Facilities

The sports complex naturally continues this architectural language. Its 300-seat stands are perfectly oriented to ensure optimal spectator comfort. The roof slopes gently, extending toward the leisure area, preserving light and views within the courtyard while integrating with the overall design, thereby reinforcing the concept of a shared, intergenerational, and open public space at the heart of the community.
