(What is not done is done)的原则,对结构、通风、水电系统的升级保持最低限度的干预。
The Tempo Nexus Library is a renovation of an idle apartment unit within the historic Lê Ngọc Apartment Building at 130 Pasteur Street in Ho Chi Minh City. This project is part of K59 Atelier's ongoing series rooted in a deep affection for Saigon's old apartment blocks.
The Lê Ngọc Apartment was built by architect Hoàng Hùng, then Director of the Directorate of Construction, between 1951 and 1961. Over the years, its original terrazzo facades were covered with water-based paint, its patterned cement tiles were covered with new materials, and its carefully crafted iron gates were replaced by aluminum-glass systems. These modifications reflect the reality of the time, when original materials were no longer in production or could no longer meet contemporary needs.
With the support and archival collaboration of the anthropological and historical research team "Tản Mạn Kiến Trúc," Ms. Châu, and Mr. Henri (an NGO member), the process of "unveiling history" began. Layer by layer, walls were peeled back, revealing terrazzo cement tiles with cloud patterns, and original wrought-iron decorative motifs were restored—all showcasing the exquisite skills of local craftsmen. From these remnants of the past, a brand-new space gradually took shape.
During the renovation, there was a deeper understanding of the building’s natural ventilation, coupled with a cautious respect for the existing load-bearing structure, and an upgrade of the aging water supply and drainage systems. Reinforcements and adjustments were only made when necessary, aiming to extend the building's lifespan and revitalize the original appearance of the Immeuble Lê Ngọc while acknowledging its position in the contemporary context.
Working within this building also provided deep insight into the residents' self-governance committee and the strong sense of community within old Saigon apartment blocks—where shared spaces fostered collective responsibility and social cohesion.
The Tempo Nexus is more than just a library; it is an experiment in reviving urban memory—allowing the old to be reborn through restraint and prudence. Its design adheres to the philosophy of "What is not done is done," placing preservation above display, engaging in a dialogue with history rather than negating it.
