The Tanatap Frame Garden cafe is another iteration prototype of multi-layered green space, featuring dynamic platforms that can rise and fall, creating a walkable rooftop landscape that offers the public an extended space to appreciate the public park from a better, grander perspective.

The design pursues an elevation-less architectural style, stemming from the question: what if the flexibility of community activities, art exhibitions, and garden spaces could define the space and shape the building's character as an infinitely transforming functional facade? The design aims to present a selfless creative concept, hiding numerous sheltered indoor spaces within a simple multi-layered garden. The created space is continuous, rather than initial.

The ingenious juxtaposition of four types of frames (stainless steel, artwork, Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete (GRC), and glass) enhances the perspective, allowing visitors to enjoy the park scenery while, conversely, the public park can view the visitors in the cafe garden as framed art objects. The architects hoped to create a fresh and vibrant new type of public space that achieves commercial sustainability in developing cities like Jakarta, where government-run public spaces often have low reliability.

The Frame Garden contributes to the urban landscape with its maximum possible transparency. This building is nothing more than a framed garden with double shading and low-energy indoor areas. The oasis-like rainbow skylight in the center of the garden allows the setting sun's afterglow to shine directly into the indoor cafe. By optimizing negative space, many causal contrasting spaces are created. As a commercial garden in a dense residential area, the Frame Garden is located in an extremely hot environment, yet, like many other experimental Tanatap commercial garden designs, it uses this unique location to prove one point: regardless of macro-environmental challenges, passive low-energy commercial design remains feasible and profitable in tropical developing countries.

The design explores the minimalist beauty of basic geometric shapes. The design aims to introduce a strong cubic volume, sculpted through the contrast between a series of symmetrical, playful floor layouts on the ground level and an organic amphitheater on the second level. The building has no front or back, allowing free approach from all directions while fully utilizing the surrounding landscape. The frame acts as a catalyst for the wind-tunnel effect, allowing visitors to enjoy the public park view in the breeze.

Upon entering the Frame Garden, visitors first feel a sense of enclosure and envelopment in terms of width and height. After entering the building, they walk under a very low ceiling of 2.2 meters, and as they move from the front garden on the ground floor to the back garden, the space gradually increases in height up to 7.5 meters. The passage connecting the two existing gardens blurs the boundary between indoor and outdoor spaces. Upon entering, they are drawn to the seemingly cut skylights and the activities of people above the garden. The winding and symmetrical interior space gradually unfolds, bringing a series of similar tunnel experiences, eventually connecting to a 9-meter-high sheltered public garden, where the perspective gradually changes as visitors move deeper into the garden and ascend. These spaces ultimately lead to spacious, multi-layered garden areas, indirectly guiding visitors to fully enjoy the charm of the tropical garden.

Similar to many previous experimental tropical cafe gardens, RAD+ar has custom-optimized the inside-outside concept, creating a different atmosphere every hour through the shade of a series of floating gardens, benefiting from the seamless borrowing of the view of the opposite public park; it offers visitors a unique experience to enjoy the integration of semi-outdoor and indoor art galleries with artificial jungles. The open layout creates efficient internal unit flow and interaction between the bar area, communal tables, and passages.

This design, as an experimental plan, aims to observe and understand the changes in user behavior after the architect reconstructs the spatial hierarchy. RAD+ar uses this project to further understand the behavior of visitors when defining spaces they do not fully comprehend; therefore, most of the furniture in this cafe is not explicitly defined, blending with the hardscape and landscape features, thus becoming an experiment for visitors/users to define their own comfort when using this furniture. This is viewed as a social experiment observing how people continuously redefine their sense of 'third space' in open spaces/gardens and constantly adjust as the crowd changes throughout the day.
