The planning and design of the second phase of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, emphasize the connection between the campus environment and the surrounding landscape, while focusing on the coordination between building clusters and individual structures. The design utilizes staggered massing of varying heights to form open courtyards of different shapes, establishing a campus space that balances humanistic scale with natural ecology. In 2023, the construction of the first phase of the campus was officially completed, presenting a natural scene of local growth. The second phase continues the planning concept of "Mountain, Forest, Courtyard" from the first phase, following the green axis structure developed along the mountain according to the long and narrow base. Four distinct building clusters are formed in the front, middle, and rear sections of the campus space. To cope with the high-density functional requirements of the second phase, the design fully utilizes the three remaining plots around the campus, implanting four compact spatial clusters within the overall loosely extended site. These are: the teaching courtyard to the left of the campus entrance, the auditorium and conference center to the right, the research building and clock tower square at the far end, which together with the completed central atrium square of the first phase, form four key nodal spaces in the linear landscape campus.

Urban Interface and Natural Permeation: A Campus Interwoven with Landscape

In the first phase planning, CUHK-Shenzhen aimed to maintain the visual continuity of the green mountains within the long and narrow campus by arranging the main teaching volumes in a continuous sequence of long, linear spaces along the southeast side, away from the mountains. This strategy not only shaped a clear urban interface but also allowed the natural landscape on the northwest side to fully unfold towards the campus. Public buildings on campus—such as the library, student center, administration building, conference center, and Shaw College—are spread out along the mountains as independent volumes, like "pavilions." The continuous mountains penetrate the visual corridors between the buildings, drawing mountain views, water bodies, and natural ecology into the campus green axis. The second phase further reinforces the spatial connections between clusters on this basis, forming a campus texture with well-distributed density. The design uses the trees and lawns in the green axis as a framework, extending four building clusters, and organizes scattered courtyards into compact groups with the help of corridors, plazas, water bodies, and platforms. To meet the development density requirements while creating an equally comfortable user experience, the building clusters adopted a three-tiered height strategy: low, medium, and high. While constructing three-dimensional composite courtyards, the design utilizes platform courtyards at different elevations, achieving "mountain viewing and water proximity" through framing, steps, and corridors, making the natural landscape an integral part of the campus space.

Teaching Clusters: Open Enclosure, Floating Interlacement

The teaching building courtyard cluster is enclosed by four buildings arranged in a pinwheel square layout, with alternating high and low volumes creating a multi-layered, interconnected, and open three-dimensional courtyard that connects the entrance campus space and defines the landmark at the street corner. The high-rise and multi-story volumes change orientation alternately to coordinate different functions and the surrounding mountain landscape, connecting the campus entrance with the first phase buildings. By elevating the volumes at the street corner, an open "floating box" and entrance steps are formed. The "floating box," besides being a landmark facing the city, also acts as a transitional space connecting the campus and the city along with the large steps. The elevation introduces mountain views and summer southeast winds from outside the campus, providing shaded and ventilated activity areas for students. The teaching building courtyard cluster is located to the left of the campus entrance plaza, forming a dynamic balance on either side of the school gate axis with the conference center cluster on the right. The courtyard features two ground levels at different elevations, connecting the external vehicle ring road and the central campus green axis, opening up to public space. Overall, the pinwheel arrangement of two high and two low volumes in the teaching cluster, combined with materials such as wood, green bricks, and ceramic panels, modulates the spatial scales of multi-story classrooms and high-rise offices, forming a three-dimensional courtyard that is open, enclosed, and multi-layered. Through strategic elevations of 6 meters and 12 meters, the courtyard is set with corridor platforms of different heights, which, combined with the gaps between the building volumes, provide resting and communication spaces for students. These platforms also connect the teaching courtyard of CUHK-Shenzhen's first phase with the auditorium and conference center cluster on the opposite side via the campus corridor system. Under the background of high-density development, it successfully creates a well-proportioned, interconnected, and human-scaled three-dimensional courtyard space.

Auditorium and Conference Center: Built by Water, Platforms for Viewing

The auditorium and conference center volumes are arranged utilizing the retained natural pond at the campus corner as a turning point. Starting from the pond, the design connects the entrance plaza with the mountain lake through the framing effect of the auditorium gatehouse. Simultaneously, the conference center links various meeting halls and multi-story platforms through a vertical atrium, integrating the pond with the campus space via a lakeside corridor. The auditorium building, located to the right of the school gate, combines L-shaped high and low volumes, using the iconic gatehouse to frame views, connecting the entrance plaza and the surrounding environment. The cylindrical auditorium space forms a visual corridor, with the ground-floor student canteen opening outwards towards the pond. The lobby organizes the main and side entrances and seating areas. Coupled with the triangular skylight, structure, and shading system on the roof, it not only meets the needs of thousands of people for graduation ceremonies but also becomes a three-dimensional public space for daily viewing and activities for students. The corresponding conference center is situated at the pond corner, also adopting an L-shaped volume, accommodating low-rise conference functions and high-rise office/accommodation. The framing corridor at the entrance offers views of the distant mountains and lake, and connects to the ecological pond via steps and the waterside. The high-ceiling atrium main staircase in the hall connects conference spaces on each floor, extending activities to the viewing courtyards on the third and fourth floors, forming strategic low, medium, and high platforms that echo the roof garden. The design integrates the site landscape, preserving the lake, trees, and sightlines to the nearby mountains. Platforms at different elevations face the ecological pond and the framed views of the mountain lake, integrating the green mountain scenery with the campus entrance.

Atrium Plaza: Viewing Mountains and Introducing Water, Multi-level Corridors

The atrium plaza, enclosed by the library, student center, and the sequence of teaching courtyards, integrates elevation differences through upper and lower corridors, connecting to the campus second-floor corridor system. It utilizes the space between the library and student center buildings to introduce the natural landscape of the back mountain into the campus via a lotus pond surface. The library and student center on either side of the atrium plaza form a square cloister, creating the core public space of the campus with the sunken atrium plaza. Underground Level 1 passages feature living facilities such as supermarkets and bookstores, connecting the student center and the ground floor of the teaching buildings; the upper corridors and skybridges link different buildings, forming a three-dimensional composite architectural landscape. The atrium plaza itself, as a "void" space, is an actively functioning "landscape architecture." It connects the campus green spaces via stepped plazas and gentle slopes, linking the northern and southern building clusters with lawns, woods, and pools, thus maintaining the continuity of the campus's east-west green axis.

Research Building and Clock Tower: Layered Topography, Plazas as Landmarks

The research building, composed of two sets of parallel high and low volumes, turns and unfolds to face the mountain views and the campus. Its base steps down according to the topography, connecting to the clock tower square via corridors to form an opposing view at the end of the campus axis. The parallel volumes face the back mountain and the city respectively, integrating into one entity facing the campus through their turns. The gaps between the volumes and the long garden platforms are staggered, guiding central air convection and connecting to the mountain behind. The research building has a semi-enclosed L-shaped courtyard plan. The interior atrium combines horizontal exhibition halls and vertical lobbies to introduce daylight, and utilizes rising steps to guide people to the outdoor platforms for distant mountain views, serving as a place for exchange, discussion, and rest for scientific research experiments. Located on the campus terrace, the research building follows the natural terrain, connecting to the clock tower square at the bottom of the campus axis via layered platforms, corridors, and mountain paths. The clock tower employs a dense eave design to create a visual impression of ascending layers, forming the end view of the campus axis along with the plaza steps and lawns, creating a campus landmark of one in front and one behind, one large and one small, in relation to the research building, extending the campus spatial imagination to the distant mountains.

Courtyard Platforms: Connection and Transition for the Campus

Under the compact conditions of high density and small plots in the second phase of CUHK-Shenzhen, the various building clusters use different height combinations—such as pinwheel squares, corner framing, and high-low parallel enclosures—in conjunction with topography, ponds, and mountains to modulate platform courtyards with human-friendly scales. Coupled with the campus's upper and lower ground levels and 6-meter and 12-meter high corridors, the clusters feature transitional platform courtyards at elevations of 12 and 18 meters, connecting to the 24-meter high roof garden. As the floor height density increases, the strategy shifts from planar enclosure to the relationship of sectional platforms. These platform courtyards not only harmonize scale and embrace nature but also serve as crucial media for connecting and transitioning campus spaces. In multi-story campus buildings with high density and large volumes, these platforms become important public and semi-public spaces, providing comfortable shaded, rain-sheltered, ventilated, and illuminated areas in the hot and humid South China climate.

The design of CUHK-Shenzhen campus reflects upon the approach adopted by many large campuses that rely on axes, functions, and zoning to employ multi-story or high-rise building types, exploring how spatial strategies like enclosure, connection, and gaps can be utilized to introduce natural ecology into dense urban-rural campuses. The design of the second phase focuses on the connections between building clusters, using tree-lined lawns and plazas as the framework, and organizing loose courtyards into interconnected building groups with the help of corridors, water bodies, and platforms. The design further integrates natural landscapes into multi-level campus spaces, establishing a three-dimensional, richly sequenced composite campus system that initiates a virtuous interaction between architecture, landscape, and urban space.
