The new science center in Pont-de-Claix – Cosmocité – is a cultural landmark that integrates architecture, science, and landscape. Conceived as a journey of exploration, the building allows visitors to uncover the mysteries of the universe while revisiting the site's history and appreciating the unique character of the surrounding city.
This project is rooted in the memory of the Grands Moulins de Villancourt, an industrial complex that long defined the local landscape. Although the original structure could not be preserved for functional and safety reasons, its iconic silhouette inspired the design. The new building reinterprets this memory through two distinct volumes: a bright, white prism designed for circulation and open spaces, and a deep, megalithic block housing immersive scientific areas. This contrast embodies the dialogue between heritage and contemporary innovation, industrial memory and scientific imagination.

Designing Cosmocité presented significant challenges. The decision to demolish the existing structure while preserving the symbolic meaning of the original building was a turning point, requiring a delicate balance between homage and innovation. The project itself was highly complex, needing to satisfy advanced technical requirements for acoustics, projection, and stage sets, while ensuring clear and intuitive public circulation routes. Achieving this coherence under budgetary constraints and sustainability objectives necessitated close collaboration between architects, engineers, and stage designers from the very beginning of the project.

The building is characterized by compactness and efficiency. Its structure relies on reinforced concrete for stability and acoustics, supplemented by steel framing to support the planetarium dome. The facade combines black aluminum panels, stainless steel, and translucent polycarbonate sheets, creating a dialogue between weight and lightness. High-performance envelopes, excellent airtightness, and energy-efficient HVAC systems ensure the building's bioclimatic performance, exceeding French regulatory standards. Construction methods prioritized durability, low-impact materials, and strict waste management protocols, aligning with the project's environmental goals.

Inside, the visitor experience narrates a journey extending from the cosmos down to Earth. An 84-seat planetarium, a 3D immersive cinema, and two themed exhibition halls—Earth and Space—create distinct atmospheres that blend education with wonder. Circulation paths are transparent and fluid, opening up framed views of the surrounding Alpine landscape. Iconic scientific elements, such as the Foucault pendulum spanning the atrium and geological core samples, firmly anchor science at the heart of the spatial experience. Educational workshops connect directly to the public hall, while the panoramic observatory crowns the building, embracing the mountains.

Cosmocité is more than a scientific facility; it is an urban beacon for the Grenoble metropolitan area. Its architecture merges clarity with emotion, memory with innovation, and environmental responsibility with cultural ambition. It is not only a place to observe the universe but also a space that invites people to question, imagine, and dream.
