In the bustling commercial streets of India's major cities, retail showrooms often compete fiercely for customer attention, armed with dazzling chandeliers, signage, and ornate facades. Fluted Volume, the 7000-square-foot headquarters for a jewelry brand in Vijayawada, takes a drastically different stance. Designed by Vineet Vora and Prachi Parekh of Studio Urban Form + Objects, this building stands tall with its monolithic presence in an earthy terracotta hue: sculptural yet understated within the urban fabric, quietly radiating authority. Its form originates from a core paradox in the design brief: how to create a building that is both eye-catching enough to draw traffic, yet reflective of the brand’s character.

Studio UF+O’s solution was to create a façade that is neither entirely opaque nor fully transparent, but exists in between. Following rigorous prototyping, the entire external mass introduces daylight through precisely designed openings and is clad in custom-cast ceramic concrete fluted panels, finished in a matte terracotta tone. These non-orthogonal modules repeat rhythmically, lending the structure a sculpted texture that subverts expectations of the commercial glitz typically associated with jewelry stores. “It was crucial to create a building that spoke of permanence and character,” says Vineet. “It shouldn’t just be a slick shell, but something that felt inherent to the city.” The interplay of light and shadow on the fluting gives the surface a dynamic texture, changing its demeanor throughout the day, while the openings are carefully oriented towards the north and east to draw in light while avoiding glare or excessive heat indoors. A layer of expanded aluminum mesh over the glass further adds an element of impenetrability and controls solar gain.

Internally, the layout organizes high-traffic functions like display, circulation, and billing on the ground floor, while more intimate areas—a VIP lounge and workspaces—are situated on ascending floors, employing a monochrome beige palette. A secure gold melting furnace is cleverly concealed within the rooftop terrace. The floor plan balances the ritual and flow of movement with functionality; the vault and high-security zones are placed towards the rear, while public areas occupy the front. Moving through the building feels like navigating a carefully choreographed dance, with transition spaces precisely calibrated to balance visibility, privacy, and control.

Natural light becomes the true protagonist in the interiors. A double-height volume, designed according to Feng Shui principles, draws daylight deep into the building via a skylight, visually opening up the internal space. Contrasting the monolithic exterior, the staircase on the south side is supported by ceramic glass bricks, refracting and scattering light to create a sense of lightness. “We wanted to bring in a moment of surprise,” notes Prachi, “a moment where one unexpectedly encounters the building’s refined beauty.” This radiant moment transforms what could have been a subdued interior—due to high security requirements—into a bright and uplifting environment.

The exterior’s fluted motif also extends indoors, used in partitions, flooring, and display backdrops, creating a close connection between the brand’s architectural language and its jewelry collection. This interior-exterior continuity challenges the notion of the building as merely a container, proposing instead a cohesive spatial language where the architecture merges with the brand.

Yet, Fluted Volume is not just a design triumph but an outcome of perseverance. Being street-facing on three sides, the construction was entirely exposed to public view, drawing commentary from acquaintances and passersby who expected chandeliers and shiny surfaces instead. The quiet, monolithic nature of the building invited skepticism and pressure to conform to local expectations. “What is unique about this project is that it resisted the external clamor, influences, and the temptation to dilute the vision,” recalls Prachi. “Eventually,” Vineet adds, “the city, which was skeptical initially, has now claimed it as its own, affectionately calling it the ‘Red Fort.’”

In this sense, the project's achievement lies not just in harmonizing the competitive demands of security, visibility, and functionality. Its deeper victory is in how it held its ground: a sculptural landmark that refuses to be a spectacle yet asserts its presence, offering a novel architectural language for jewelry retail in India.
