The design of the new wing for the Art Museum of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) is themed around "Qi, Cheng, Li, Xin" (Start, Continue, Establish, Renew), symbolizing the role of the new wing in promoting Chinese culture, inheriting the broad learning of CUHK, and nurturing future leaders. Therefore, the form of the new building aims to present the momentum of Lingnan peaks, rising from the University Mall, connecting to the East Wing of the old Art Museum, and then soaring above the topography, integrating into the natural environment and landforms of CUHK.

The Art Museum new wing also seeks to engage in a dialogue with the natural environment and topography of CUHK. Inspired by Zhang Daqian’s "Four Screens of Landscape" and Dai Jin’s "Imitation of Ma Yuan’s Strolling under the Treetops" from the CUHK Art Museum’s ink wash collection, the ambition was to construct the artistic conception of "providing shade under the rocks." Consequently, the new wing is cantilevered, preserving the existing hillside to maintain the shaded groves beneath the building without interruption.

The cantilevered structure, besides minimizing impact on the original terrain, also meets the exhibition space requirements of the Art Museum. The exhibition halls of the new wing are elevated, directly connecting to two existing exhibition spaces in the old building, providing a seamless exhibition experience.

The spatial circulation of the Art Museum new wing utilizes the building's signature staircase to effortlessly connect the University Mall in the north to University Road and the University Town in the south, forming a cultural shortcut. This facilitates the flow of people between the University Mall and University Road through the multi-purpose lobby, the characteristic staircase, and the new and old exhibition spaces, allowing the public to experience the temperament of Chinese culture and its collections.

The design of the characteristic "V" shaped columns in the Art Museum new wing originates from the architect's reflection and understanding of "inheritance" (Chuan). In Chinese culture, "Cheng" not only means to take over and continue but also implies support and underpinning. The "V" shaped columns respond to the interpretation of inheritance in Chinese culture, embodying the new wing's future role in cultural creation, exchange, and education. Furthermore, the "V" shape pays homage to the Vitasoy brand founded by Dr. Lo Kwee-seong.

The external wall design of the new wing references the ancient technique of depicting texture using "cun" strokes (texture lines) to present the beauty of landscape painting. A unique template was designed to exhibit the subtle presence of objects, varying shades, and rhythmic density characteristic of ink wash painting on the fair-faced concrete walls.
