China, Shanghai – The Shanghai office of Danish firm Schmidt Hammer Lassen Architects (SHL) has completed the West Bund Grand Theatre, the first waterfront performing arts center in Shanghai's West Bund Cultural Corridor. Located along the Huangpu River in Shanghai, the West Bund is one of the fastest-growing areas for art, culture, and commerce, aiming to become a world-class waterfront district comparable to the Left Bank in Paris or the South Bank in London. Formerly a busy industrial base in the early 20th century, the West Bund development strategy integrates existing buildings with new constructions within pedestrian-friendly landscaped public spaces, fostering a vibrant and lively atmosphere. Once fully realized, the 9.4 square kilometer West Bund will be Asia's largest cultural and arts district.

The new theatre forms an "Yin and Yang" complementarity with the adjacent West Bund Dome Art Center, a historical building renovated and repurposed by SHL. While the Dome Art Center appears translucent, emitting a subtle glow at night, the massive volume of the Grand Theatre presents a sculptural, abstract beauty. The Dome Art Center was once the main production facility of the largest cement factory in China; the new theatre pays homage to this industrial heritage through a contemporary interpretation in concrete. The building's skin, clad in GFRC (Glass Fibre Reinforced Concrete) panels, features variegated horizontal stripes that express the continuous flow of the Huangpu River water.

“The Huangpu River is vital to Shanghai,” says Chris Hardie, Design Director at SHL Architects. “It’s a rare gift to be situated right on the riverbank. Here you truly feel the activity of the Huangpu River—it is ceaseless, always flowing, carrying ships comparable in size to the theatre volume slowly along. The river is always so dynamic when you walk along it, and we wanted the West Bund Grand Theatre to possess that same power.”

The West Bund Grand Theatre, with its Grand Theatre and smaller black box theatre, is benchmarked against world-class performing arts centers. It not only provides excellent acoustics and viewing experiences but also emphasizes its public nature through a large outdoor public plaza. Inside the public spaces, people can enjoy views of the Huangpu River and the West Bund scenery through massive glass curtain walls. Spacious terraces—one on the roof and another on an intermediate level—offer audiences outdoor resting spots between performances to enjoy the waterfront views and the magnificent city skyline.
