At the Viking Fortress Borgring, history and landscape are brought to life through an experience center inspired by the characteristic longhouses and royal halls of the Viking Age. The experience center is designed by LOOP Architects, with LYTT Architects and engineering company VIGGO MADSEN as subcontracted consultants.

Among Denmark's five well-preserved Viking ring fortresses, the uniquely shaped and spectacular Borgring stands out prominently in the landscape. Today, with the opening of the newly completed experience center, the fortress is given a new interpretation. This 2,000 square meter center houses exhibition areas, a Viking research center, event spaces, and visitor service facilities.

The building facade and the central arrival space are clad in black, charred recycled wood. This material directly echoes Viking Age building techniques in both scent and texture, showcasing the traditional wood preservation methods used by the Vikings. At the same time, it creates a dark, inviting, and mysterious atmosphere closely connected to the Viking Age.

Darkness and shadow are recurring elements throughout the design, stimulating visitors' curiosity and imagination. As visitors move upwards from the dark exhibition halls on the ground floor to the light-filled viewing space within the large roof structure, they experience a dramatic transition from dark to light, a powerful narrative technique that enhances the overall experience.

The roof surface not only shelters the building’s recycled timber facade but also provides shading. The extended eaves form a covered outdoor area for group gatherings. The building’s compact form enhances its energy efficiency, and the technical spaces are logically arranged to shape its unique silhouette. The project is constructed using a lightweight and flexible steel structure system, which reduces material use and facilitates future disassembly and reuse.
