Since 2019, Snøhetta, in collaboration with Christener Architects, Schuler Shook lighting designers, BSI Constructors, and acousticians Kirkegaard, has been leading the expansion and modernization of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra’s historic venue, Powell Hall. In preparation for the hall’s centennial in 2025, the institution embarked on an ambitious 64,000-square-foot (approx. 5946 square meters) expansion with the team led by Snøhetta as the design architect and landscape architect. The project aims to achieve more comprehensive accessibility and open the doors to the community, creating a facility that supports and nurtures the creative process from ideation through performance.

Drawing inspiration from the spatial language of the historic hall and the forms of the instruments within, the entrance is designed as a series of angled shell structures composed of tilted masonry units, creating a vestibule ancillary space defined by simple sloping planes and arched openings. The arched city windows reveal the internal sense of delight and creative energy, offering a glimpse of the activity within even before entering. Inside, the triple-height space features a series of gathering areas, including terraces that face each other, allowing audiences to both view the surroundings and be part of the spectacle.

Also inspired by the lyrical qualities inherent in the music itself, Snøhetta designed a revitalized public plaza at the intersection of Grand Boulevard and Samuel Shepard Drive, extending the hall’s activities outdoors to create a welcoming, sunlit square. From an urban planning perspective, this space gathers the vitality of neighboring cultural institutions, creating a vibrant new public realm with multiple functions—a place for pre-event gatherings, an area that integrates vehicle drop-off to the east, and a lush garden for everyone to enjoy.

In other areas of the site, smooth circulation flows and arrival sequences allow people to quickly reach their destinations while also providing flexible space for programming. Multiple pathways are established within the plaza, offering barrier-free access from various directions. Tall groves of plantings delineate the entrances, conveying a warm welcome to visitors.
