Located at the foot of Luofu Mountain in Boluo County, Huizhou, Xionggang Reservoir is surrounded by lush forests and is jokingly called the "Sea of Boluo" due to its vast water surface. The lake-circling road is 27 kilometers long and only allows non-motorized vehicles, attracting many cyclists, motorcyclists, and hikers on weekdays. Due to the scarcity of existing service stations, there is a lack of places for stopping and resting.

Fenggu Rest Stop is situated in the woods on the slope next to the lake-circling road, facing the reservoir across the road. The original site consisted of two terraced platforms excavated on the slope. On the lower terrace, there were two simple light-steel houses, with a two-meter height difference from the lake-circling road, connected by a set of steps. The upper terrace had a crudely dug flood diversion ditch to handle mountain torrents. The forest was dense, partially obscuring the two-level terraces.

Following the Terrain: A Green Palm Flowing Towards the Water

Looking back, the entire design process was about following the natural contours. To preserve all the trees and minimize earthwork excavation, the existing two-level terraces were utilized, replacing the simple houses on the lower terrace with the new rest stop building. The hardened ground previously used for the simple structures led to a loss of green patches in the forest, which was then mended through roof planting—the green roof seems to grow out of the earth, seamlessly connecting with the greenery of the upper terrace, resembling a green palm flowing from the hillside towards the water. The dense forest obstructed the view of Fenggu Rest Stop towards the lake and also concealed it from the lake-circling road. Thus, the five fingers of the palm extend through the gaps in the trees towards the water, forming viewing platforms for the lake at varying angles, and making the forest rest stop more easily noticeable to cyclists. The palm's center is arched to provide sufficient clear height for the small structure below; the fingertips droop to avoid low-hanging branches.

Generally, designs that avoid trees rely heavily on precise topographic surveys of the tree locations. However, because the site is within a military exercise area, we anticipated that satellite mapping would be inaccurate. Therefore, the palm was designed with flexible, small broken lines, similar to a freehand sketch, to allow for easy adjustments during construction if discrepancies with the survey arose, without significantly affecting the schedule. It was later confirmed that there were indeed significant errors even after two surveys, necessitating substantial plan modifications during construction.

Fenggu Rest Stop is defined as a cycling station, where all paths are either cyclable or at least allow for pushing a bike. People can ride up onto the roof or wander up and down, in and out, among the trees. Since the retained steps were not suitable for cycling, dedicated cycle paths were constructed on both the left and right sides from the lake-circling road, weaving through the woods to connect to the terraces.

In the Chinese perspective on mountain and water landscapes, "Shi" (势 - potential energy or momentum) is a crucial concept, viewed as the sinews of the earth and the meridians of nature, embodying the direction, spirit, and inherent vitality of the mountains and rivers. Therefore, "following the terrain" or "letting nature take its course" not only describes the design process but also the symbiotic relationship between Fenggu Rest Stop and nature. It is about mending rather than destroying, continuing rather than interrupting, using the five fingers as a green canopy, guiding the forest flow towards the water.

A Roadside Tea Shelter Where One Can Go to the Roof to See the "Sea"

The rest stop resembles a traditional roadside tea shelter, welcoming passersby to sit down for a cup of coffee. The small house underneath the canopy houses the coffee preparation area and restrooms. The small house has five carved-out openings and five niches: a coffee sales window, a door, a skylight, an outdoor sink, and adjacent niches for sculpture and the air conditioning unit. Hooks are installed on the wall for hanging cyclists' bikes. This is a small house like a Swiss Army knife.

Following the new cycle path through the woods from the lake-circling road leads to the lower terrace and the small house. After buying coffee, one can cycle all the way up to the roof to gaze at the reservoir from the fingertips of the green palm. The art installation "Tentacles" takes root on the lower platform, extending upwards above the roof like a fishing rod. Visitors sitting on it can sway with the "tentacles," interacting with the grass, trees, and sky in a playful manner.

Thanks to the shade and the breeze by the lake, even in Guangdong in June, it is comfortable to stay on the green palm. Sitting on the "Tentacles" watching the seamless view of the lake and sky is enough to make one drowsy. If it rains or more sun protection is needed, one can sit under the canopy. The soil-covered roof keeps the area under the canopy cool and pleasant. Under the canopy are the folding chairs and stacking tables designed by us, which are large, comfortable, and easy to store, colored in the official theme color of "Sixteen Pleasures." There are also benches paved with pink tiles, following folk wisdom for cool and comfortable seating.

Responding to Multiple Traditions

Imagining that South China tigers might still roam in the remote forest, building a tiger-skin wall might also fit the theme of a forest rest stop... Fenggu Rest Stop’s tiger-skin wall is not as ornate as traditional palace walls, nor does it lose its spirit while mimicking the retaining walls rapidly built in recent decades—even the drawn circles and stone seams do not correspond. In fact, the grouting of the tiger-skin wall possesses a modern aesthetic of planar composition; after balancing construction time and the artisans' skills, emphasizing this beauty is sufficient.

There are other delightful small details: each fingertip of the green palm has a small cap, which is the roof's drainage outlet; under the steps leading to the roof, large-leaf grass grows wildly like a waterfall; the marble mosaic guide lines embedded in the terrazzo steps are a traditional practice, existing at least since the Republic of China era, though not specifically researched. Dry-stacked stone and terrazzo are also materials and methods popularly seen in old parks. There is a mix of tradition and the contemporary: equipping the coffee operation room with an air curtain and a galvanized iron rolling shutter, and using easy-to-clean patterned tiles for the interior walls of the two rooms—not viewing this as ugly, but appreciating their affordability, usability, and grounded nature... There are also some regrets; the original steel mesh ribbed ceiling was intended to be painted red, like plastic products, while the spindle-shaped columns were to be wrapped with hemp rope, resembling toothpicks. The red plastic stools and toothpicks were hoped to elicit a knowing smile from lovers of Guangdong's outdoor eateries...

Before Fenggu Rest Stop officially opened, a group of motorcycle uncles arrived with their tea sets for a gathering. Listening to the uncles loudly playing "Stupid Kid," besides envying their affluent, leisurely, and tasteful lifestyle, we also hoped that we truly added some characteristics to Fenggu Rest Stop that are both local and universal. In reality, the more local something is, the more universal it becomes.
