材料与形态的奇幻构建:THEVERYMANY 工作室展示了其标志性的“奇幻建筑”制作风格,将简单的铝条构建成一个复杂而引人入胜的整体。色彩渐变(七种微妙色调)的应用,不仅呼应了自然环境(植被与天空),更赋予了结构生命力。从不同角度观察时,结构时而如同从地面生长的“外星植物”,时而呈现出“张力十足的爬行动物形态”,这种动态的、多义的形态语言,是建筑设计中对材料潜能和视觉叙事深度挖掘的绝佳范例。

From the pier, the view that usually unfolds is one of water, but at the site of Marc Fornes’s new sculpture, “Pier 865,” visitors are treated to a panoramic view overlooking the canopy of a historic park in Knoxville. Much like the architectural structure it is named after, this sculpture, commissioned by the City of Knoxville, connects two worlds, bridging the Old City and the Theatre District, inviting passersby to walk to the end of the pier and immerse themselves in a moment of contemplation and viewing. “Pier 865” also draws more people to linger: a cantilevered wing structure on one side forms a shaded stage suitable for small gatherings and public performances.

In this work, the THEVERYMANY studio, led by Fornes, showcases its signature style of fabrication, expanding a simple concept into a fantastical piece of architecture. Palm-sized, colored aluminum strips are pieced together to form individual facets of the whole, building an engaging world that immerses the viewer in a journey of pure, simulated travel.

Each aluminum strip is pre-folded and coated with a gradient color palette composed of seven subtle hues—soft greens, deep ocean blues, and a touch of cream yellow—which both complements the park’s vegetation and sky while asserting a distinct vibrancy. Its organic form evokes different life forms from various angles: viewed from the ground, the sculpture appears like an alien plant growing from the concrete; while observed from above, it takes on the appearance of a taut reptile.

The dialogue between the solid pier and the light canopy creates a subtle orchestration of form, color, and space that can be enjoyed by both casual visitors and those who linger to explore every angle. This artwork is a duet of weight and lightness. Its in-situ cast concrete pier extends the downtown plane into the park’s green space, forming an organic landscape composed of benches, steps, and resting surfaces.
坚固的码头与轻盈的树冠之间的对话,营造出了一场形式、色彩与空间的巧妙编排,无论是随意到访的游客,还是驻足细细探索每个角度的人,都能从中获得美的享受。这件艺术品宛如一场重量与轻盈的二重奏。其现场浇筑的混凝土码头将市中心的平面延伸至公园的绿地之中,形成了由长椅、台阶和休憩台面构成的有机景观。

Above, the light aluminum canopy is supported by five slender columns, and its three cantilevered wing structures offer distinct experiences: a forward-extending loop structure sparks curiosity and playfulness; a raised wing forms a shaded stage for performances and gatherings; and a low, recessed wing invites quiet time nestled among the foliage, with views extending towards distant mountains.
上方,轻巧的铝制顶棚由五根纤细的支柱支撑,其三个悬臂式翼状结构带来了别具一格的体验:一个向前延伸的环状结构激发着人们的好奇心与玩趣;一个抬高的翼状结构形成了一个遮荫的舞台,可供表演与聚会使用;还有一个低矮、内缩的翼状结构则邀请人们在树丛间享受静谧时光,其视野可延伸至远处的山峦。

Although this sculpture is the newest and most ambitious artistic centerpiece of the park, it continues a long-standing local tradition. The park, established in 1986 to celebrate Knoxville’s country music heritage, has long served as a cultural landmark for the city. With “Pier 865,” Fornes contributes to the public art tradition of this cradle of country music by introducing a unique dimension that is both functional and contemporary.
