Following two and a half years of construction, the $123.8 million expansion and renovation of the Hopkins Center (or “Hop”) celebrated its grand reopening the weekend of October 17. The revitalized gateway to the campus arts district aims to bring artists and audiences together by providing new rehearsal and performance spaces, strengthening connections to surrounding arts buildings, and enhancing accessibility across the site.

In addition to integrating state-of-the-art digital and broadcast capabilities, the expansion adds more rehearsal and production areas, allowing artists and audiences to engage with and enjoy contemporary artistic expression while complementing the original Hopkins Center building designed by Wallace K. Harrison. Snøhetta’s expansion design both complements the expressive existing architecture and preserves the building’s iconic arches and distinct character, as well as beloved spaces like the Hop main level, Moore Theater, and Spaulding Auditorium. Snøhetta’s renovation of the Hop is the latest enhancement to Dartmouth’s arts district, following the completion of the Black Family Visual Arts Center, designed by Machado Silvetti in 2012, and the redesigned Hood Museum of Art by Tod Williams and Billie Tsien Architects in 2019.

Our design embodies the blend of ruggedness and refinement unique to this corner of New Hampshire. The exterior plaza is carefully sculpted to guide visitors intuitively toward places of gathering, meeting, and entry. The space is designed as a platform to enhance the daily lives of students and faculty, welcoming visitors and offering a glimpse into the vibrant life of artistic creation happening inside the building.

A new entrance connected to the interior of the Hopkins Center links the existing building spaces with the renewed facilities. The new lobby, referred to as the “Forum,” creates a vibrant social space that engages students and faculty throughout the day, or audiences before and after performances. A central staircase connects the Forum to the second floor, linking the new recital hall and performance lab to the ground floor and plaza.

The 150-seat recital hall is designed as a glass-enclosed lantern overlooking the plaza, with commanding views of Baker-Berry Library Tower and the sugar maples on the Green. Its conical, arched window frames, utilizing an innovative curved glazing system, allow ample natural light into the hall’s flexible seating arrangements. The space, finished with custom millwork and fine details, is also equipped with state-of-the-art audiovisual equipment, which will foster student-led performance media creation while transforming the Hop into a broadcast center for digital performances.

One level below the Forum is the new dance studio—a rehearsal space partially embedded underground, featuring high windows to the north that borrow light and offer glimpses of the plaza’s tree canopy. As the first space in the Hop specifically designed for dance rehearsal, the studio’s 24-foot ceilings and bright interior provide an ideal setting for dance teams to perfect their choreography. The design also renovates the Hop’s 900-seat theater, Spaulding Auditorium, while carefully upgrading the beloved gathering space, the Hop main level.
