In the late 1970s, China shifted its focus to economic construction, and Shenzhen became China's first Special Economic Zone.
China Merchants Group, originating from Hong Kong, took the lead by establishing the Shekou Industrial Zone in Shenzhen, blasting rocks and reclaiming land to build a port on the Nantou Peninsula, attracting foreign investment, thus becoming a pioneer of China's Reform and Opening Up.
The successful operational mechanism of the industrial zone was later termed the "Shekou Model," which inaugurated the prelude to China's 40 years of economic take-off.
Established in 1872 during the late Qing Dynasty, China Merchants Group experienced ups and downs through the Republic of China and the People's Republic eras. To commemorate its 150th anniversary, the site for the China Merchants Group History Museum was selected at Weiboshan in Shekou.

Weiboshan, originally an unnamed hill in Shekou, got its name because the first commercial microwave station in China was built on its summit. URBANUS was invited to design the China Merchants Group History Museum and proposed the design concept: “The Mountain is the Exhibition Venue, the City is the Exhibition.” The entire Weiboshan Park is treated as a spatial narrative whole.
The narrative unfolds from the "Time Square" at the foot of the mountain, which is the site where the "Shekou Rock Blasting Cannon," symbolizing the dawn of Reform and Opening Up, exploded. The monument in the center of the square is engraved with Mr. Yuan Geng’s famous quote, considered the essence of Shenzhen's spirit: “Time is money, efficiency is life.”
Ascending the steps, significant events in the history of Reform and Opening Up are inscribed along the circular narrative pathway around the mountain, corresponding with the surrounding urban landscape, presenting a juxtaposition of history and the present, forming multiple landscape nodes. Climbing the mountain becomes part of viewing the exhibition, culminating at the museum on the summit.

The design of the museum began with verifying the original location of the microwave station. After comparing historical blueprints and conducting on-site inspections, the original structure of the microwave station was found amidst the building that had undergone multiple additions. The plan restored the original appearance of the microwave station, reinforced its foundation, allowing it to become the most historically significant exhibit in the museum in its capacity as an "original artifact."

The museum building has five levels. The semi-basement level houses the main entrance, foyer, a small reception room, major equipment rooms, and a multi-functional hall that can operate independently when the museum is closed.
博物馆建筑共五层。半地下层设置了主入口、门厅、小型接待室以及主要设备机房,还设置了一个可在闭馆时独立开放的多动能厅;
The first and second floors are arranged around the restored microwave station, housing the permanent exhibition halls detailing the 150-year history of China Merchants Group.
The third-floor elevated level is an observation deck open to the public, connecting to the mountain path. It features a café/reception area suitable for meetings and salons. Visitors can sit indoors or outdoors, enjoying a 360-degree view of the Shekou peninsula, witnessing Shekou—the ongoing “urban exhibition venue”—in real-time.
三层架空层是向公众开放的观景平台,连接登山步道。这里设有咖啡厅/接待室,可用于会议和沙龙。人们可在室内外闲坐,360度观看蛇口的半岛风光,见证进行时中的蛇口这一“城市展场”;
The fourth floor is dedicated to contemporary art exhibitions; the suspended volume contains a continuous, surrounding exhibition space for short-term thematic displays. Variously shaped windows facing different directions frame views of the surrounding nature and city, incorporating the changing urban scenery into the exhibition sequence.
The rooftop is an open observation deck, the highest point of Weiboshan, serving as a place for panoramic viewing and outdoor events. In addition to the indoor exhibition flow, the design incorporates multiple outdoor public pathways, allowing citizens access even after the museum closes. This rich, multi-layered visiting experience enables the museum to adapt to various exhibition and event requirements.

The China Merchants Group History Museum is not an ordinary museum; it marks a significant turning point in contemporary Chinese history and serves as a spatial venue for inheriting and promoting the spirit of Reform and Opening Up.
We attempt to tightly integrate a milestone commemorative building with the daily lives of ordinary citizens, creating contemporary public space and urban memory. When people ascend Weiboshan, they look upon the vast sky and sea while simultaneously reviewing history, looking to the future, honoring the pioneers, and inspiring future generations; this aims to transform Weiboshan, a secret retreat hidden in the city, into a spiritual landmark of Shenzhen and an anchor point for citizens' daily cultural life.
