From the architect. Espace Mayenne is a multi-functional facility, comprising a large sports and entertainment venue capable of accommodating 4500 people, a gymnasium with a climbing wall scaled for international competitions, and a conference hall. In addition to these three main venues, various other spaces can be found, such as partner lounges designed as modular rooms to host guests during competitions or shows, as well as offices and changing rooms for artists and athletes. Externally, the project is completed by a car park for 670 vehicles, a landscaped area, and a 250-meter long cycling track intended for national competitions, which also houses a training track in its center.

Site
Espace Mayenne is located on a former military base bordering the city of Laval, along the D900 urban ring road. The project began with an urban and landscape study aimed at defining guidelines for the future development of the site within the framework of the new Ferrié neighborhood. This is an evolving area, essential to the dynamic revitalization of the city. The organization of the building respects the landscape structure and the memory of the site, combining ecology, compactness, and economy in a large-volume plan that saves ground for future projects.

The landscape heritage of the site is remarkable. It consists of a natural area—swamps, woods, and wet meadows—and an old leafy hedge with sculpted trees and sunken alleys, all of which have been preserved. An east-west pedestrian and cycle path is built to structure the site, crossing the public car park and the wetlands before widening into a forecourt in front of the building.

The building
To fit into the soil economy and formal optimization, the building is a single volume that organizes the three venues under one block. The organic angles of the building stem from its concept. It is less a design gesture than the result of a process that connects the three halls onto a single landscape. Its facade, like a skin wrapped around the rooms, changes shape depending on the viewpoint.

It consists of three horizontally stacked ribbons that deform to wrap around the volume as tightly as possible. These three ribbons overlap and turn around the building, creating fluidity, unity, and movement. Together, they create a flexible plane covering the entire height of the building, lifting themselves in places to reveal the glass curtain walls. Its complex form is broken down into simple, identical geometric elements that allow for rational construction using textured aluminum panels.

The halls
The hall is designed in the interstitial space between the three main venues. It is functionally allowed different public flows to circulate according to the different occupancy scenarios—the three venues can be used simultaneously or separately. The hall is characterized by its inverted conch-shaped volume and its suspended acoustic ceiling made of wooden boards. The building has two ground floors and is divided into different types of circulation—public, athletes, technicians, artists, staff, and partners—which are clearly distinguished.

The Sports and Entertainment Auditorium
The functional organization of the building responds to its multiple uses. The transformable auditorium stems from its need for versatility, as it must accommodate uses for shows, concerts, and sports competitions. While sporting events require a playing field system surrounded by spectators in the stands, concerts and shows require a frontal system with a stage. The room is asymmetrical, with a large balcony on one side, which makes it possible to set up a stage on the long north side, thus reducing the distance between performers and the audience. By pulling the diagonal curtains, the stage configuration transforms into a trapezoid opening outwards from the stage frame. In the configuration for sports events, the field is tightly enclosed by the stands.

The technical treatment of this hall has been deeply considered so that it can quickly change configuration from one use to another: the space is completely transformed according to the program. The design of the walls, alternating between raw concrete and wool felt, is the result of close collaboration with the acoustician. Areas of sound absorption, reverberation, or a mix of both are defined by the distribution of sound through the space by the wavy raw concrete, while the alternation of concrete strips and wool felt strips is used for the mixed areas, and stretched felt on acoustic pads for the absorption areas behind the stands. Suspended felt panels are designed for the ceiling, creating an aerial geometric pattern. Behind them is hidden a huge technical grid that allows for great flexibility in terms of equipment and scene setting.
