The Māris Štrombergs BMX track in Valmiera, Latvia, named after the two-time Olympic and World Champion from Latvia, is a significant contribution to both global BMX sports and Latvia's regional sports infrastructure. It is one of the few BMX tracks in the world whose design focuses not only on UCI (Union Cycliste Internationale) regulations and athlete comfort and safety but also on the architectural aesthetics of the facility. The architect of the new facility, Ilze Rukmane-Poča, emphasized that naming the building after the two-time Latvian Olympic and World Champion makes it a highly practical sports facility, but also a bold landmark for the city.

The new BMX track is located on the grounds of the Vidzeme Olympic Centre, in Štromberg's hometown, Valmiera, the sixth largest city in Latvia. The BMX track covers an area of over 15,500 square meters and features starting hills of 5m, 8m, and 3m high. The straight sections of each track are at least 8m wide, widening up to 14m at the corners, with a total length of just under 1 km. It is the only track in the world that allows races to be held simultaneously with three different starting gate heights, which saves time and creates more efficient competitions.

The jumps and corners are laid with clay on a foundation of drainage, anti-frost sand, and coarse mineral materials. Thomas Hamon, an experienced expert from Pro Tracks and the designer of the BMX track for the upcoming Tokyo Olympics, assisted in designing the track layout and competition grounds.

The building at the BMX start is composed of two rectangular structures—the starting hills—arranged relative to each other at a 10-degree angle. This positioning prevents strong winds from interfering with the athletes' start.

The architectural form of the building at the start fully embodies the principle set by the outstanding American architect of the 20th century, Louis Sullivan—form follows function. To maximize functionality, a powerful and durable trinity of materials was chosen: metal, concrete, and wood. Metal dominates in the load-bearing structures and is also the main component used in decorative and detailing work. The wooden structure of the building is decorated with natural, lightly bleached deciduous wood.

A careful study and analysis of the rules and techniques of BMX were conducted when designing the building, which is why a key element in creating the architectural composition was the rhythm and dynamic seriality. Having the right rhythm is a major key to success for a BMX rider. Similarly, the dynamism observable in every move of a BMX rider on the track is emphasized in the main facade of the building, which features two symbolic images of Māris Štrombergs "drawn" with perforated metal. The first image reflects the moment seen on the track—the athlete's body crouched in mid-air before the next jump upon landing; the second is a shot of the athlete crossing the finish line, winning the Olympic gold medal.

The documentary images are stylized and exaggerated, giving the project some emotional resonance. Due to the considerable size of the images, they are visible from a distance when driving along the main city streets. When viewed from afar, the dynamism of the images stands out against the static nature of the structure.

The building is designed for 0–90 people; at the same time, a maximum of 30 people can be on the track, which is why it has attached fencing. The BMX track is designed as a training track, but the facility can be adapted for competitions, accommodating about 3,000 spectators. The track is equipped with the MYLAPS timing system, with split points in several places on the track and on the starting hills.

The space under the starting hills has been fitted with an autonomously integrated wooden structure building. The rooms located under the starting hill can be used for theoretical lessons, BMX bike maintenance, lectures, athlete lounges, and trainer courses. The award-winning Latvian BMX coach Ivo Lakučs highly rated this brand-new sports facility: "Competitions of the highest level can be held in this facility, as everything is thought out, comfortable, safe, and well adapted to the specifics of BMX sports."
