From the architect. The College of Veterinary Medicine at Unile ã o University is located in the city of Juazeiro do Norte, in the Cariri region of southern Cear á state. This is a veterinary school hospital where students can intern under the guidance of teachers. The hospital will provide services for both small and large animals, including small animal breeding areas (kennels and cat houses), large animal breeding areas, enclosures, consultation rooms, laboratories, surgical centers, classrooms, and administrative areas. The design concept of this project is to separate the large roof from the building and provide sufficient shading for the buildings below. This is the main strategy for achieving thermal comfort. The roof is supported by metal trusses, curved in shape like several waves, with interruptions in the middle to facilitate the release of hot air. Some areas are also covered with translucent polycarbonate tiles to utilize natural light. The large area of sun visors not only protects the building, but also the enclosure and the parking area for large animals.

In addition, the sloping terrain was modified to form two platforms with a height difference of 4 meters. These platforms can accommodate buildings, sometimes with only one floor, sometimes with two floors. The various activities of the hospital are divided into six spaced blocks (rectangular or trapezoidal). The space between buildings facilitates cross ventilation, and the existing various gardens help create a pleasant microclimate. The windows of these buildings are vertically staggered, sometimes starting from the top and sometimes from the ground, bringing vitality to the exterior walls.

A seven meter high large sun visor made of solid ceramic bricks forms a grid like element that can filter out the strong sunlight in the area and protect the interior of the building. This type of masonry is snake shaped and is also used to separate public and private areas of buildings. Finally, the building aims to become an oasis in the desert, adopting a passive bioclimatic strategy to minimize the heat impact of semi-arid climate and provide spacious and comfortable space for the proposed activities.
