An adaptive update at the urban-rural junction
Tangshan Ancient Ape Man Cave Scenic Area is located in a valley east of Nanjing city. It is famous for the discovery of ancient ape man sites and has always been a famous tourist destination in the suburbs of Nanjing.. The area where the scenic spot is located belongs to the urban-rural junction and has always been an important transportation artery in history. An east-west road runs through the valley. Due to the close distance and limited space between the mountain and the road, as well as the presence of a drainage channel in the site, the scenic area, parking lot, and community public land are mutually constrained. As a result, the Yuanren Cave scenic area has been plagued by problems such as poor transportation, lack of prominent image, and insufficient service facilities.

In 2017, the Tangshan Cultural Tourism Zone Management Committee carried out an overall update of the entrance area of the Yuanren Cave scenic area. The renovated main square of the scenic area is open to the road, and its streamlined spatial form that conforms to the mountain terrain is not only popular among tourists, but also a rare public open space that has become a daily gathering place for surrounding community residents. The bus parking lot and social parking lot have been rearranged on the west side of the main square, with independent entrances and exits, and dedicated pedestrian walkways along the water channel to guide visitors to the main square. This measure separates the flow of people and vehicles entering the scenic area, solving the traffic problem in the narrow entrance area. The entrance small square to the east of the main square is connected to the entrance of the scenic area on one hand, and on the other hand, it leads to an unpowered children's playground. In addition, two tourist service buildings have been updated in the entrance area, which are located on the foundations of two existing buildings. One is a tourist service point that has been rebuilt near the parking lot using the original ticket office land, including a public restroom. The other is a scenic area supporting service building that has been built using the original bus station office building land.

It is worth noting that the purpose of the renovation of the entrance area of the Ape Man Cave scenic area is not only to improve the facilities of the scenic area, but also to supplement the functions of this community located in a narrow valley. For example, the beautiful public open square has become a popular destination for local residents, and the non motorized children's playground will also be developed as a popular destination. At the same time, a specialty restaurant will be built to meet people's dining needs. This functional configuration that combines public welfare and commercial nature is based on considerations for the later operation of the project, that is, balancing the maintenance and management costs of scenic facilities through commercial profits, which is one of the key elements for the sustainable development of the project.

Architecture serves as a boundary for land use
Usually, when delineating spatial boundaries in enclosed paid scenic areas, we see simple and direct methods such as adding gates and walls. However, the narrow geographical environment and diverse functional requirements of the entrance area of the Yuanren Cave scenic area attempt to give this spatial boundary more meaning and purpose..

The original bus station office building in the site is a long, two-story brick and concrete structure. Its linear layout is mainly due to its construction along a drainage channel, while the other side of the building is a fan-shaped forest in the scenic area. Constrained by these conditions, the design relied on the foundation of the original building to rearrange a similarly laid out linear building. In consideration of catchment and flood discharge during rainstorm, the originally open drainage channel is transformed into an underground box culvert in this section of the building, and a landscape pond is used on the ground as the catchment of surface runoff. This newly built two-story high pitched rooftop building on the waterfront serves as a community restaurant. The first floor is for seating and private rooms, and the second floor is for a banquet hall, meeting the banquet needs of tour groups and locals.

The fan-shaped area on the south side of the original office building has been developed into an unpowered children's playground under the forest. As the playground operates independently and requires closed management, a continuous Z-shaped strip-shaped building is used in the design to separate the site. A children's restaurant is used to enclose the physical space of the playground under the forest inward, and an entrance small square is enclosed together with the community restaurant outward to facilitate the gathering and gathering of tourists. The building is equipped with service rooms such as ticket offices and information centers facing tourists. The entrance and exit of the children's playground and the Ape Man Cave scenic area are set up on one side of the mountain, and a transparent souvenir shop is used to separate them.

The Z-shaped building is separated from the straight shaped building by a narrow and long courtyard and a courtyard. The courtyard meets the ventilation and lighting needs of the first floor private rooms, while the courtyard is used to concentrate the placement of air conditioning outdoor units. The eastern end of the building is close to the entrance of the scenic area, so arranging the kitchen in this area is conducive to the transportation of goods. At the same time, the kitchen also connects the eastern ends of the linear and Z-shaped buildings together, serving as a common backcourt space for the community restaurant for external services and the children's restaurant for internal services.

The Ape Man Cave is famous for the discovery of upright human fossils in caves on the mountain. The cave is the climax of the entire scenic area, so the buildings and structures in the front area should not appear in a noisy manner. How to coordinate with the gentle ridges and enhance their guidance is the primary issue that buildings need to consider. Therefore, the building is located at the foot of the mountain in a "lying" posture, without shaping itself into a shape that imitates caves or ancient architectural images. Because artificially shortening the time gap will only destroy the true value of historical relics, but through continuous eaves and corridors, the gray space makes the building look more like a "guide", welcoming and humble. The posture leads visitors into historical relics.

Meanwhile, architecture has its own way of being present, attempting to reflect its local characteristics through materials and construction methods. Tangshan is famous for its limestone geology, with the mountain covered in bamboo and wood. In addition to the 500000 year old ruins, natural materials such as soil, stone, and bamboo and wood were selected as expressions for the architecture. These materials were artificially processed to become strong, durable, and easy to construct, which may have been the purpose of prehistoric hominids using tools in caves.

Rammed earth as a wall, even if it is not a simple enclosure, still plays an important role in architecture. After adding modern materials such as steel bars and cement, the crack resistance and waterproofing of rammed earth walls have been improved. With the coordination of longitudinal and transverse walls, the long rammed earth wall plays a role in physical space separation, like a main line, allowing other spaces to attach and grow on it. Engineering bamboo, as an industrialized laminated biomass material, has the characteristics of assembly through steel connecting plates. The frame structure of engineering bamboo is separated from the rammed earth wall, allowing the internal space to be flexibly separated according to its function. Due to the light weight and small foundation of the structure, it has excellent adaptability for construction on sites between water channels and forests.

Small sized lightweight steel structures also have the characteristics of assembly. The elongated community restaurant adopts a steel frame structure system, and the transition from the roof of the porch on the first floor to the roof of the banquet hall on the second floor is carried out in a sequential lifting manner, which presents a double eave image in the direction of pedestrian flow. The roof truss adopts a chord beam structure to reduce the cross-sectional size of the steel beams. On the side facing the water pond, several private dining rooms are arranged under the long horizontal eaves, and the exterior wall of the kitchen is separated from the eaves by a rammed earth wall. The second floor roof also uses the shape of a staircase at the end to form a bite on the rammed earth wall. The combination of elements such as walls, eaves, and gardens in architecture reconstructs a new order of the place.

Architectural Details for Dialogue with the Environment
In addition to using small volume, transparency, and lightweight features to express a low disturbance intention to the site, architecture also reflects a posture of dialogue with the natural environment in local details.. The entrance of the community restaurant features several low walls made of rubble, defining two platforms that fall towards the water surface, creating a relaxed and comfortable outdoor space for the restaurant. The concrete roof of the rammed earth wall in the narrow and long courtyard extends in a row of water tongues towards one side of the courtyard, and on the other side, a full-length inner gutter protrudes towards the sloping roof of the children's restaurant on the first floor, which is precisely embedded between the wall and the engineering bamboo columns. The water tongue drains the rainwater from the inner gutter, and a concrete sink is used below to receive the falling rainwater. This "one spit, one receive" scene is highly symbolic of Chinese culture and has become a backdrop for the courtyard Chinese restaurant. The roof of the kitchen at the east end of the building is an outdoor platform that is close to the tree crown and overlooks the mountain of the Ape Man Cave, creating a pleasant outdoor dining atmosphere. Windows are a medium for indoor characters to perceive outdoor scenery, and the treatment of windows in this design presents different forms depending on their location. The private rooms on the first floor facing the pond use glass boxes separated from each other under the eaves to give diners a feeling of being enveloped by the outdoor environment. The banquet hall on the second floor adopts horizontal long windows, and the scenery of the mountains and forests seems to unfold along the interior like a painting. The black titanium zinc sheet metal roof contrasts with the light warm colors of rammed earth and bamboo wood at the bottom, and the top and high side windows on the roof provide opportunities for tree branches and light to appear at the top of the building interior. These measures are constantly promoting dialogue between indoor users and the outdoor environment.

Conclusion
The entrance space of the scenic area near the community is not only exclusive to the scenic area, but also nurtures the living habits and traditions of the local people. It is a common asset of the community residents. Therefore, in the treatment of the boundary of the scenic area, more ambiguity and sharing are needed to supplement some of the functional shortcomings of the community, while reducing the coldness caused by rigid isolation, creating more space for tourists to stay, and helping the building to integrate into the community as a living organism, integrate into nature, and become a place that encourages public behavior..
