In a century old educational park in Belagavi, a fifty year old company office building is undergoing an expansion project, which presents a unique design challenge: to expand the existing building without compromising its original integrity, disrupting its daily operations, or concealing its historical significance.

Although from an architectural perspective, this original two-story building does not have any particularly outstanding features, it carries profound institutional value. The building has undergone renovation and has been in continuous use, so any large-scale structural renovation is not feasible. This expansion project needs to carefully consider three different environmental backgrounds - it is located next to a main road in the city, is a cutting-edge building of a historic campus, and is adjacent to a sports field on one side.

The solution is to adopt a simple and strategic renovation approach: creating a new structure above the existing building, supported only by eight cylindrical reinforced concrete (RCC) columns, to avoid interfering with existing activities below. This suspended building is framed by a two-story red truss, forming an open plan office with an area of 1000 square meters. Visually, it is light and transparent, and the space utilization is efficient. A vertical transportation core connects the newly added part to the ground, forming an L-shaped outline, creating a striking three story entrance passage that echoes a central avenue lined with green trees. This not only marks an entrance to the campus, but also frames the historical buildings within it, creating a unique landscape.

The design of the new office building draws inspiration from colonial architecture, surrounded by continuous corridors that blend seamlessly with the surrounding environment while mitigating the impact of the local climate. The corridor is both a social space and a climate buffer zone, providing shade from sunlight and rain indoors. Adjustable aluminum blinds and expanded metal mesh control light and view, while sliding glass doors provide seamless access to the outdoors. The interior adopts neutral tones, complemented by vibrant accent colors and indoor plants, creating a peaceful and naturally lit workspace.

The overall plan is divided into three parts: the entrance hall of the chairman's office, the central area of the private office and conference room, and the rear space of the open workstation that overlooks the city and sports field. The exposed roof trusses and skylights define the central circulation ridge.

Connecting the old and new buildings is a glass elevator overlooking the sports field, providing a momentary pause for people to transition between the buildings. The terrace of the old office has been redesigned as a interstitial space - partially open and partially obscured by the new structure - accessible through a sculptural circular staircase.

At first, the project appeared to be a simple linear volume, but in reality, it was a layered response to various backgrounds, functions, and climate demands. The new building provides a calm and sheltered facade for the city, serving as a welcoming gateway to the campus while respecting its historical heritage and adding new elements to the institution.
