Xixi Guomai Bookstore/Pattern Architecture

The project is located at the northern end of Xixi Wetland Fudi. The original building was an office building from twenty years ago - with a U-shaped symmetrical layout and a complex combination of functional spaces. The building is elevated on the wetland, and the water courtyard surrounded by three wings is closed and passive. The design requires exterior renovation and interior design to transform it into a bookstore.

The first floor is planned as a space that surrounds the water courtyard and is horizontally connected. The vertical main space on the west side accommodates book exhibition and sales functions, while the book bar on the north wing serves as a coffee reading area; The south wing is the reading salon area, connected to the second floor landscape terrace through outdoor stairs. Peel off all the enclosing walls, leaving behind a chaotic and meaningless concrete frame structure. The intervention of a series of new "structural groups" forcibly assigns a new order to the originally chaotic structure, transforming it into a spatial field deeply associated with nature.

01 Disassembly of the original frame
In response to the intricately arranged roof beams and slabs in their original state, the original frame structure was disassembled into a cluster of columns that supported the staggered volume by introducing a suspended ceiling system that accommodated mechanical and electrical equipment.. On the existing curved lane of the main entrance platform, a staggered pedestrian walkway made of cement strips has been laid, transforming the original vehicle platform into an entrance space with diverse scales and directional changes. The simplification and adjustment of the volume of the west roof, along with the retreat of the colonnade into the facade, have transformed the original axis symmetric facade into a horizontal suspended volume, thereby enhancing the public nature of the building.

Weight of 02 Wooden Beam Group
For the original 6 * 6-meter frame column grid, a wooden double beam system has been introduced.. Each group of wooden double beams passes through and clamps the concrete columns, establishing a horizontal spatial order perpendicular to the water courtyard and connecting the inside and outside of the U-shape. The structure is made of glued pine beams, which are structurally fixed to concrete columns through concealed support plate nodes, and suspended to the outside at various locations. The gap between the double beams serves as an integrated strip for air conditioning return air and column lighting equipment.

In the horizontal spatial field formed by the wooden beam group, two vertical spatial disturbances were further designed, one is the book tower leading to the sky, and the other is the water pavilion leading to the wetland, allowing the natural landscape to intervene in the bookstore space in a more three-dimensional manner.

03 Raised Book Pagoda
A "Book Pagoda" has been added to the high volume in the southwest corner.. The two nested circular interlayers form a cross-sectional pattern similar to a theater, with staggered scales providing seating and reading spaces at different elevations. The window facing east introduces the greenery of the wetland in the distance.

The mezzanine of the book tower breaks the conventional treatment of floor slabs. The steel beam mezzanine with a cross shaped layout is erected between the concrete columns and suspended downwards. The top surface of the I-beam is level with the wooden floor, presenting a horizontal element that is homogeneous with the wooden beam: at the end of the vertical space, the beam group is stacked downwards to release natural light. The silhouettes of people inside the book tower were intercepted by horizontal wooden beams, creating a floating landscape.

04 Sinking Water Pavilion
The irregular glass volume of the original building facing the water courtyard has been replaced with a single sloping roof.. The geometric potential of planar oblique lines is fully utilized, naturally forming the slope crest where the profile gradually descends; At the same time, the original floor slab was partially knocked out and transformed into a sunken near water area. The depressed roof and sunken ground work together to create a "water pavilion" that blends into the wetland. The exit staircase provides a reading space facing the wetland and sitting on three sides.

At the corner of the U-shaped plane, the water pavilion is "ceded" to the water courtyard, which not only creates a horizontal twist in the indoor space, but also obtains a vertical force directed towards the wetland water surface, strengthening the wetland's role in the internal space. The roof of the water pavilion is made of gray titanium zinc plate, and the ceiling is sprayed with silver metallic paint as a whole: it not only strengthens the spatial force of the slope top as an object pressing down on the water surface, but also highlights the subtle reaction of silver to the reflection of ambient light, as a reflection of the natural water light background. The huge water pavilion ceiling reflects rippling water waves every morning, and the wetland "enters" the interior in this peculiar way.

05 Suspended eaves
The "Construction Method" records a type of Song style water facing exterior eaves decoration component - "Barrier Sun".. The design provides a contemporary translation of this traditional prototype: wooden beams break through the boundaries of the building and protrude outward. The eaves are suspended on both sides of the wooden beams by pull-up suspension rods, and are supported in the middle by a downward sloping rod, thus forming a special water facing building interface. The eaves are constructed using materials similar to those used in water pavilions.

As an intermediary element of the building's adjacent water boundary, eaves have two functions. One is to adjust the indoor lighting, while blocking the glaring direct sunlight, the silver ceiling provides soft diffused light, forming a more suitable indoor space for reading; The second is to adjust the spatial scale, with the lowered eaves blocking out the interference of tourists from Fudi and the two wings of the water courtyard, allowing people's indoor gaze to be directed downwards towards the wetland water surface, enhancing the perception of the building being elevated above the water. The overhanging eaves of wooden beams, the elevated table and chair components between columns, the three-dimensional staggered glass interface, and the foldable windows that can be fully opened together form multiple intermediary fields between architecture and nature.

06 Interlocking Book Beam
The bookshelf is designed as a specific structural element that parasitizes between columns - a transparent "book beam", hoping to allow readers to see both books and scenery.. We collaborated with the structural engineer Zhang Zhun to create the "Book Beam" structural device: a combination structure consisting of horizontal wooden beams and vertical stainless steel plates stacked horizontally to form a composite structure: glued laminated wood and European pine plates are combined to form an I-shaped section, supporting a structural span of up to 6 meters, while vertical stainless steel plates connect the wooden beams into a structural whole, achieving torsional resistance in the plane. The book beam is suspended by structural suspension rods on both sides and fixed to the columns, achieving a "beam" shaped stress mode.

The six sets of book beams are staggered in height between the columns, forming a rich spatial interlocking effect with the wooden beam group. They float in the white space, defining a group of fields with ambiguous boundaries and open to nature. Xixi Wetland, as a secondary urban wetland in Hangzhou, is a place for nearby residents to take daily walks and ride bicycles. We have built a transparent and open bookstore on the wetland, allowing people to read books and nature at the same time, becoming a public place embedded in the natural life of the city.
