Continuing the shade under the banyan tree
Continuing to protect the villagers' days and nights

The idea of the Dawuhui living room comes from this shade under the banyan tree.. The original school building was a courtyard surrounded on all sides. There is a two-story teaching building, an auxiliary room for teachers on the first floor, and a towering banyan tree of three hundred. The entire school building is placed under this banyan tree. After seeing this banyan tree, we had an inspiration. In the past, people in the village gathered under the tree for various activities such as chatting, eating, drinking tea, and enjoying the cool breeze. This tree has become the soul of social interaction in the village. Therefore, the core of our renovation this time is to open up the entire courtyard, making the entire space look like a huge shade of trees. "Gu Yi recalled the most direct inspiration for the architectural renovation a year ago.

The space starts from a 300 year old banyan tree and extends outwards. The architectural design team dismantled numerous walls and utilized advanced steel and wood structures to build a continuous borderless community. Adhering to this design philosophy, the architect reorganized the original two-story teaching building, overturned the public toilets near the river, and renovated them together. Open all the auxiliary rooms of the original teachers and make them into corridors. An interesting curve extends from the platform on the first floor to connect to the second floor, creating a three-dimensional space resembling a grandstand, releasing the viewing experience of outstanding people sitting under the banyan tree.

The Coexistence of New and Old
Experience the Traces of Time

Another close-up of the living room of Dawuhui is the coexistence of new and old elements here, interspersed in a brand new structure and form.. The architect has preserved the plaque of the "Songchang Teaching Building" that has weathered 40 years of wind and rain, as well as a brick wall with graffiti paintings by children and a green wooden door. Chaozhou is by the sea. The wall tiles for building houses are made by mixing powdered shells with sand and then pressing them into bricks, which is a unique construction technique in the local area. When building a new door and window system made of washed stone material, the development of washed stone also followed the traditional practices of Chaozhou. At the same time, old objects such as stone tablets, nameplates, wood carvings, and stone pillars are also preserved, hoping that they will continue to play an important protective role in the new building. I also want to pay tribute to the traditional ritual system of Chaozhou culture, which emphasizes the importance of "being a person before they can be a person, and everything should be explained".

Whether on the first or second floor, the architect chose traditional wooden window frames and a large amount of wooden furniture as interior fillings, because this type of craftsmanship gives many modern materials a warmth that they do not have, and also reflects Chaozhou's appreciation for craftsmanship and nature as a city that inherits intangible cultural heritage.

Let the sunshine of every day
slowly seep into the daily lives of the villagers through this shade

Building a seemingly light and load-bearing "shade" is not easy.
. The entire span is almost 20 meters, but not a single pillar can be seen. Teacher Wang Jin ultimately completed the challenge with a scale of 22 centimeters, creating a highlight in the entire project. This should be considered the most difficult project I have ever worked on, "said Wang Jin.

A school building that has been sealed off by time has been slowly opened by architect Gu Yi's heart and ingenuity. Villagers from Dawu Village or guests who came here out of admiration are walking in from all directions. The first floor corridor, theater, handicraft workshop, and shared kitchen; The self-study room, tea academy, and intangible cultural heritage experience area on the second floor. Paintings soaked in tree shadows and water ripples stretch out one by one: children study and run here after school; Parents sit here chatting and drinking tea; The elderly rely on a few to pass the time; Aunties who enjoy singing trendy dramas rehearse and perform informal plays here. During festivals and holidays, everyone gathers here to worship ancestors, dance lions, sing English songs, and set up flowing water tables.

The "Da Wu Hui Living Room" under the banyan tree belongs to the reception room of Da Wu Village. Villagers can enjoy all their leisure activities outside their homes here. At the same time, it can also become the most ceremonial space for entertaining guests.

Architect Gu Yi hopes that this public space will be open, inclusive, and peaceful. It should not be defined and can meet diverse needs, applicable to any scenario. You don't have to deliberately see the design techniques, what you ultimately experience is the designer's original intention. He hopes that here, accompanied by the gentle breeze, the sunshine and even rainwater of every day can slowly seep into the daily activities of the villagers. I hope they can love this place, just like Gu Yi and his friends, as well as the team of 'Dream Reformer' cherish this big banyan tree.
