Students from St ä delschule and Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences (Frankfurt UAS) have implemented a groundbreaking temporary building project called 'The Frankfurt Prototype' in the courtyard of the Senckenberg Research Institute. The characteristic of this temporary building is that the first floor has an open multifunctional market hall, while the second floor is tailored with flexible living and working spaces for students. This building combines sustainable materials with adaptable spatial concepts, aiming to promote communication between people and encourage them to get closer to nature. Barkow Leibinger architectural firm provided support to students during the planning and implementation process of the project, and assisted them until the completion of the project in the fall of 2024.

The core of the project lies in its cost-effective and resource efficient design, while ensuring high-quality living space. By using recycled steel and reused concrete formwork, the project has minimized carbon dioxide emissions to the greatest extent possible. The modular prefabricated residential units on the second floor can be flexibly adjusted according to different living needs. The market hall on the first floor serves as the "living room" of the city, serving as a theater, cinema, exhibition space, and sustainable product market, highlighting the importance of regional food supply.

The concept of this project also includes innovative elements that promote biodiversity and sustainable urban living, such as the "Green City Filter". The students worked closely with researchers from the Sengenberg Society to develop elements that are beneficial for biodiversity in the structure of buildings.

In addition to the architecture firm Barclou Leibinger, Yara von Lindequist and Rudi Scheuermann (from Arup Engineering), as well as Schneider+Schumacher Architects, also participated in the implementation of the project. The building will be open until the end of the year in the courtyard of the Senkenberg Institute and will become a vibrant venue for people to discuss and reflect on the future of the city. Afterwards, the building will be repurposed for other purposes.
