The project is located in a block of hutongs in the old city of Beijing, covering an area of approximately 97 square meters, surrounded by a large courtyard. Before taking over the project, other teams had already undergone a renovation, so this renovation belongs to a second optimization (re renovation). The current situation of the project is not ideal. There is a street facing window in the north room, and in addition, there are two skylights on each of the first and second floors. The skylights on the first floor are located in the square skylight in the corner of the south room and the circular skylight in the center. However, due to the lack of sufficient lighting and the limitations of the courtyard, the first impression given upon entering the space is oppressive, as if one is at the bottom of a well. The scale issue of the space itself is too narrow and high, resulting in a particularly noticeable echo effect and greatly reducing overall comfort.

TraditionalIntegration of Houses with New Houses--Integration of Traditional and Modern
The traditional building on the site is the North Building, which has good structural quality and should be preserved for appropriate renovation. And the long strip south is an antique building construction method. For newly built wooden houses, except for the foundation wall, the rest can be considered for demolition. During the on-site investigation, it was discovered that there is a protected ancient tree with a height of about 21 meters in the courtyard about 32 meters south of the plot. This ancient tree has become a major highlight in the space. As is well known, in the design of traditional courtyard houses and large courtyards in Beijing, courtyards are the core charm. If there is no courtyard, you can directly admire this ancient tree. And this design incorporates the concept of "borrowing scenery" into the renovation plan through repeated deliberation and research on the roof height difference, in order to solve the problems of lighting and courtyard feeling. Traditional green bricks, tube tiles, and wooden structures, combined with natural elements of ancient trees and bamboo, reflect the "traces of time". Through hierarchical integration, they endow new spaces with deeper cultural charm and contemporary significance.

LightSpace layout and roof--FreedomMixing of activitiesInterweaving and fusion
This renovation has systematically optimized the existing problems in the space. The two large pillars in the center of the house divide the space into two halves, lacking a foyer and clear spatial definition. The small courtyard in the northwest corner is connected by an outdoor ladder, which not only lacks light and shadow effects, but also limits the fluidity of the space.
The mezzanine is equipped with two bedrooms and one bathroom, and a window is opened in the staircase buffer zone, providing a view of the Beijing Bell Tower and ancient trees with light and shadow.

In the entire space design, furniture has been simplified, retaining only necessary elements such as beds and chairs, while optimizing storage space to meet actual needs. On this basis, fully utilizing the interweaving, direct, refraction, and diffusion effects of natural light, the light and shadow in seasonal changes are integrated with the "time traces" of traditional blue bricks, tube tiles, and wooden structures to create a modern residential space that combines functionality and cultural heritage.

The definition of space lies not in simple change, but in the integration of design and life. The original intention of the design is to optimize the space to fit the lifestyle of the residents, allowing them to feel comfortable and free in it, and truly enjoy their own life.
