From the architect. Triptyque showcased its latest projects at the Saint Denis Olympic and Paralympic Villages in Paris. The design purpose of the Space Building is to provide accommodation for 450 athletes from the United States during the 2024 Summer Olympics, and is a pioneering example of sustainable urban development and adaptive architecture. After the Olympics, the project will be transformed into social housing and become a vibrant new community in the rapidly developing area around the film city.

Location and Background

The building is located in the center of the Cosmic Ecological Zone and the ZAC of the Olympic and Paralympic Villages, serving as the center of transformation in northern Paris.. In history, the region has been underdeveloped in industry and economy, and is undergoing renewal to become a model of sustainable and inclusive urban living. The main facade of the building was designed by Triptyque, forming a public square with the Film City and the 2024 Paris Olympic Athletes' Village, creating a visually recognizable and captivating urban landmark.

Architectural Concept: Reversibility and Mixed Use Design

The architectural approach of this project addresses two key contemporary challenges: reversibility and mixed use functionality.. The residences are distributed in four exhibition halls, with a layout aimed at optimizing lighting and ventilation. The public area faces outward, while the bedroom is located inside to ensure privacy and thermal comfort. The exoskeleton of the building provides a private balcony for each unit, ranging in size from 5 square meters to 21.7 square meters, creating additional outdoor space for residents to connect with nature and the surrounding environment. Our idea is not to create an athlete village, but to create a new community for the city that promotes change in less popular areas, "said Guillaume Sibaud, co-founder of Triptyque. During the Olympic Games, these 300 rooms will serve as temporary accommodations for the US delegation, with each room measuring approximately 15 square meters. After September, these units will be transformed into 125 apartments, ranging in size from 30 to 105 square meters, for long-term social housing.

Sustainable Design Features

The Universeine project is seeking E3C1 certification under the French E+C - (Energy+Carbon) label, which recognizes buildings with positive energy and low carbon emissions.. The low-carbon concrete core of the building is wrapped in wooden panels for insulation and cladding. This layered structure reduces temperature fluctuations, minimizes the need for artificial cooling, and promotes cross ventilation, thereby further improving energy efficiency. Active and passive sustainability measures include: active green roofs that promote biodiversity.
Using water as a resource for urban cooling.
Install solar panels for renewable energy generation.
Adequate natural light and careful solar positioning to reduce energy consumption. Bicycle storage capacity and electric vehicle charging stations can promote sustainable mobility.

Community Integration and Social Bonds

The design of the project promotes community interaction and social bonds by sharing the underlying green space and commercial area.. The shops and offices will create a vibrant mixed use environment, ensuring the community's vitality after the Olympics. After the Olympics, the community will have around 6000 residents and create 6000 job opportunities with the support of three hectares of parks and seven hectares of gardens. The modular and reversible design of the apartment will provide flexibility to adapt to the needs of the community over time.

Triptyque works closely with Solideo (the company responsible for building villages) and other international construction companies to create a cohesive and forward thinking urban landscape. Each company showcased its architectural models and made adjustments based on group discussions, resulting in a more integrated and harmonious community.
