Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Centennial Park is a transformative 22-acre landmark project along the Detroit Riverfront, redefining the city’s connection to its waterfront. The area, formerly derelict industrial land, has been completely revitalized into a vibrant public park, establishing a new urban interface between Detroit and the river.

Adjaye Associates and Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates (MVVA) were selected from an international competition organized by the Detroit RiverFront Conservancy to lead this redevelopment. Following their selection, the final design was shaped through an extensive community engagement process, ensuring the park reflects the character of Detroit and the aspirations of its residents. MVVA’s landscape design has created a resilient environment for all seasons, celebrating nature, recreation, and community gathering. Their plan integrates flexible lawns, play areas, and green infrastructure to support year-round use and sustainability.

Adjaye Associates’ architectural design establishes the park’s identity as a vital piece of urban public space. The William Davidson Sport House is a striking structure featuring a full-size basketball court beneath a sculptural concrete canopy, offering year-round recreation and shelter. Two comfort stations, also designed by Adjaye Associates, provide restrooms and flexible community spaces. The main pavilion utilizes an adaptable enclosure system that can transition between open-air and enclosed configurations depending on the season and activity needs.

Together, these designs establish Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Centennial Park as a significant public destination, creating an inclusive space where Detroit residents can reconnect with the natural beauty of the riverfront. The William Davidson Sport House is a 28,000-square-foot pavilion supported by 33 steel columns beneath a sculptural concrete roof featuring a massive, approximately 2,000-square-foot skylight. Natural light floods this flexible indoor/outdoor pavilion, which houses a full-size Detroit Pistons basketball court for use day and night throughout the year.

The final scheme was developed following an extensive period of public consultation. Between 2018 and 2021, six large public meetings attracted over 800 participants, with additional outreach efforts through school programs, neighborhood club meetings, and city-wide exhibitions reaching over 5,000 residents in total.
