From the architect. Snøhetta, in collaboration with A49 architects, has unveiled its largest urban regeneration project in Asia for MQDC (Magnolia Quality Development Corporation). Located in one of Bangkok’s most vibrant cultural and innovation hubs—South Sukhumvit—Cloud 11 is a mixed-use development where the central courtyard functions as both ecological infrastructure and a cultural park. The design leverages the power of landscape to create an urban oasis that champions environmental resilience and community well-being.

By carving space between these layers, Cloud 11 creates a new 'in-between' realm. The result is a vast public landscape spanning multiple scales, reconnecting surrounding communities and providing a vibrant public space for all.

Responding to Urban Challenges with Landscape

Cloud 11 adopts a sustainable, landscape-based approach to offset the environmental impact of large-scale urban development. Drawing inspiration from Bangkok’s layered urban structure, its massing responds to local climatic conditions through iterative environmental wind and solar engineering. In contrast to the prevalent vertical towers in the city, this 250,000-square-meter development is conceived as a horizontal architecture that blurs the boundary between architecture and urban planning. Its diverse functions are organized around an open-air courtyard—the social and climatic core of the project. Located between the towers and podium, the elevated courtyard is an innovative response to Bangkok’s flood-prone and intensely hot climate, offering passive shading and natural ventilation.

A Creative Park for All

At the heart of Cloud 11 is a landscape that serves as critical infrastructure for both social well-being and ecological resilience. This vast green space is conceived as an ‘Adaptive Highland,’ raised above Bangkok’s flood-prone ground plane to create a safe and pleasant public terrain for gathering, playing, and connecting within a comfortable microclimate. At its center is Thailand’s largest elevated lawn—a flexible high ground for hosting festivals, performances, picnics, and everyday leisure. Framed by the central courtyard, this landscape is supplemented by a network of pocket parks acting as social condensers, offering rich experiences for everyone. Playgrounds and sport courts cater to younger visitors, while therapeutic gardens and quiet nooks serve older generations. Cultural spaces provide a stage for community gatherings and events. By bringing together these active, playful, and contemplative zones, the design fosters intergenerational and cultural exchange.

Fusing Sustainability with Cultural Heritage

Cloud 11 is deeply committed to environmental and social sustainability. Green roofs, shaded facades, and natural ventilation reduce energy demands, while permeable paving, ecological swales, rain gardens, and gravel filter beds manage stormwater through ecologically responsible infrastructure. Seating made from milled timber and recycled plastics minimizes waste while creating colorful, durable, and low-carbon social furniture. The project’s planting palette features native species that enhance moisture retention during Bangkok’s intense rainfalls, boosting environmental resilience while fostering cultural resonance. By retaining mature trees as anchors of collective memory and integrating them as living landmarks into the design, the project tightly connects ecological value with cultural heritage. The reinterpretation of the site’s former orchard, reed beds, and rice fields as a contemporary elevated park connects the community to its cultural roots while providing a vibrant green space for the future.
