International architecture firm Studio Saar has redesigned the Udaan Park in Udaipur, Rajasthan, for its non-profit client Dharohar. In the newly revitalized landscape, a heavily underutilised and dilapidated lakefront park has transformed into an accessible and inclusive public space. Located alongside Swaroop Sagar Lake, one of Udaipur's seven historic lakes, the park attracts numerous migratory birds. Udaan Park is one of the few public open spaces downtown situated on the lakeside. This redevelopment is the first park completed under Dharohar’s city-wide community-led '10 Lakh Vriksh' campaign, which aims to restore a series of parks and gardens to provide more green space for the city and its residents.

The park’s initial condition lacked steps and was invisible from the street. Over the years, it had been neglected, becoming a haven for alcoholics and drug users. Studio Saar has reworked this lost community park into a series of distinctive, interactive landscapes that connect public areas to the lakeside, offering the community a place for adventure, exploration, and wonder.

After over two years of redevelopment during the COVID crisis, Udaan has been completely transformed into a beacon for visitors. Studio Saar has reconfigured the original park’s chaotic layout to create a coherent journey from the street to the lake, while utilizing the natural topography and bedrock formations characteristic of the Rajasthan region in the landscape design.

Udaan Park now features locally planted native flora, an accessible maze composed of flowering plants, medicinal herbs, and small trees, and a children’s playground constructed from locally recycled and reused materials. The centrepiece of the site is an engaging sun-shading canopy inspired by the spectacular starling murmuration often seen in the region. Supported by a tree truss structure, a canopy of 34,000 lifelike birds made from recycled plastic forms an engaging focal point while providing shade over the seating and play areas below.

The new public space is a haven for both the young and the old. Birthday parties are commonplace; it has been adopted by the very youth who once vandalized it. They are now voluntarily involved in its upkeep. The project has set a precedent for creative reuse and upcycling materials across the city by repurposing existing site materials. Recycled tyres are used as planters, swings, play tunnels, and an entrance maze, while recycled saree fabric is used as swing ropes in the children’s play area. All non-structural metalwork, from the gates and railings to partial canopies in the park, is made from reclaimed rebar.

Ananya Singhal of Studio Saar commented, “With Udaipur’s accelerated urbanization, the city’s green cover is at risk of severe depletion, with the per capita public green space at a meagre 2 sq. m, far below the WHO prescribed norm of 9 sq. m.” “We believe that through our ongoing collaboration with Dharohar, we can initiate a movement to reshape the city’s image with community-developed and maintained open green spaces.”
