From the architect. BIG’s headquarters, located on a narrow pier in Copenhagen's Nordhavn district, is a 27-meter-tall, 7-story building. Completed in the spring of 2024, it now serves as the home for BIG’s 300 employees in Copenhagen. This is one of the first projects to realize BIG’s integrated LEAPP concept—an outcome of the collaborative effort between BIG’s internal Landscape, Engineering, Architecture, Planning, and Product Design teams.

The building is constructed using Uni-Green concrete, developed by BIG in collaboration with Unicon. In this concrete, a portion of the cement clinker is replaced with calcined clay and lime filler, reducing CO2 emissions by approximately 25% compared to conventional concrete mixes. The application of Uni-Green in this project is a bold innovation in construction methodology, pushing the exploration of concrete’s possibilities.

“LEAPP is an interdisciplinary group of people and knowledge—an acronym for Landscape, Engineering, Architecture, Planning, and Product Design. This philosophy treats architectural practice as a Renaissance, and every aspect of LEAPP is embodied in our headquarters, from planning and product design to the complex stacking of concrete components,” says Bjarke Ingels, Founder and Creative Director of BIG.

Upon entering through the 3-meter-high glass door to the main entrance, BIG employees and guests are immersed in a Piranesian space, looking up diagonally to the top floor. A meandering black steel atrium staircase visually and physically connects the various levels. A load-bearing stone column, constructed from six different types of rock—from dense granite at the bottom to porous marble at the top—forms a gravity totem pole at the core of the open space. Each level rotates slightly to align with the beams it supports. The entire building features only one primary column, with a series of stacked Scandinavian granite and marble stones placed between the beams, while the rest relies on leaning concrete walls. Every floor provides access to an outdoor terrace, which connects to the terraces above and below. One of these connections serves as an escape route running from the roof all the way to the ground floor.

On the exterior facade, a 140-meter-long staircase spirals down from the roof to the pier edge. This staircase also provides an outdoor terrace for every floor, allowing people to move between different levels along the building's exterior; simultaneously, it serves as an additional fire escape for the entire building. To maximize the openness of the working areas, the design team relocated the elevators, vertical shafts, and a smaller secondary escape staircase to the northern edge of the building, thus allowing the workspaces to receive more daylight.

At the base of the building, the BIG Landscape team transformed the former parking area into a 1,500 square meter public park, inspired by Denmark’s beaches and coastal forests. The northern side of the park is planted with native trees such as pines and oaks to withstand the strong winds of the harbor. The southern side features planting areas, rocks, and groves to support biodiversity while also providing a comfortable space for recreation and relaxation.

Hidden among the trees in the park, the sculpture “Stone 40” by American artist Benjamin Langholz offers a surprising and interactive experience for visitors of all ages. The sculpture consists of 40 stones arranged in a spiral, forming an artistic and sensory path. Along the staircase encircling the exterior of the headquarters, the landscape team has planted numerous wind-resistant tree species, shrubs, perennials, and herbs—the latter used by the chefs in the studio canteen. The rooftop terrace is paved with timber supplied by a local sawmill, continuing the natural material theme of the park. The terrace design not only establishes a connection between the urban space and the building but also offers employees and guests unique views of the city and the sea.

“We transformed the parking lot into a 1,500-square-meter beach park—a hidden gem in the urban center. Inspired by Denmark’s beautiful coastal landscapes, we envisioned a place where people can relax, play, fish, and connect intimately with nature. This park recreates the vegetation that once naturally grew here; it is both a tribute to the past and a vision for the future. By preserving the site’s industrial character and merging it with the Danish coastal landscape, this park creates a living space where nature and humanity can thrive together. We hope it becomes a lasting part of visitors' memories and serves as a paradigm for inhabitable nature,” says Giulia Frittoli, Partner and Head of BIG Landscape.
