From the architect. h3o architects, a Barcelona-based firm, has launched "La Barbacoa Comunal" (The Communal Barbecue) project, which aims to regenerate the relationship between the city and the landscape in Castell d'Aro, located in the heart of the Costa Brava. This 1700 square meter area transforms a former parking lot into a distinctive public square, vibrant with color and community spirit, serving both local residents and passersby traversing the Baix Empordà region.

Initially conceived as a park to provide access to the popular Vía Verde del Carrilet hiking route, the project gradually evolved into a parking area featuring semi-sheltered municipal barbecue facilities. In special instances, this neglected corner would come alive through impromptu communal gatherings organized by locals. These spontaneous and joyful events deeply inspired the design approach of h3o architects.

“In our Mediterranean culture, collective eating has always been a central pillar of community identity and social cohesion. Whether it’s street dinners during local festivals, romesco parties with friends in February, Sunday barbecues, or blowing out birthday candles with classmates in the park—these are all moments where food fosters community bonding,” emphasize Adrià Orriols, Joan Gener, and Miquel Ruiz from h3o architects.

The firm's main inspiration was treating collective dining as an element of social dynamism and revitalization in public space. The project seeks to enhance and celebrate this symbolically significant gathering place for the community through three key concepts: the sculptural barbecue area, a large sawtooth table accommodating up to 50 people, and the re-naturalization of the surrounding environment.

The renovated square is centered around the original barbecue area, giving the entire space a unique character. The barbecue grill has been restored and visually reinforced, clad in blue tiles and ceramic details that bring a Mediterranean touch to the square. Two new elements stand out: an organically designed canopy provides shade for the cook, topped with a chimney that makes the barbecue area a visible landmark from a distance.

Another major highlight of the project is the winding long table that weaves between the trees. Designed by the firm, this table can host up to 50 diners, encouraging socializing and communal eating within a naturalized atmosphere. Furthermore, the table offers flexibility and accessibility by leaving clear spaces, allowing it to adapt to different scenarios and needs.

In addition to improving the gathering place, the project aims to make a positive environmental contribution through a process of re-naturalization. By retaining some existing trees and planting native vegetation, a landscape dimension is added to the square. This includes species that promote bird nesting and flowering plants that encourage pollination. Rocks of various sizes add depth and solidity to the space’s geometry, contrasting with the earthy tones of the rocks and vegetation against the vibrant color of the barbecue area.

The asphalt surface that once covered the parking lot has been transformed into an engaging layout of fragmented shapes with different textures and tones. Most of the original asphalt slabs were removed, leaving two paths to guide visitors through the square: one passing through the green areas and another connecting the main street to the barbecue area, allowing the square to merge seamlessly with its surroundings. By replacing much of the asphalt with vegetation, the project reduces the "heat island" effect and improves soil permeability, creating a fresher and more pleasant space.

"The Communal Barbecue" not only fulfills the function of an urban space but also rethinks the concept of community through gastronomy and architecture. h3o architects' project incorporates design elements that encourage social interaction and connection with nature, aiming to foster a renewed awareness of the shared environment. Consequently, the square becomes a stage where vitality and social bonds intertwine, making every gathering a celebration of collective life.
