To meet the new venue needs for the annual fair in Chetumal, the government initiated a grant program. This fair has evolved into an important annual celebration, featuring concerts, rides, and artisan markets. The 10-hectare site, surrounded by subtropical jungle, presented a unique opportunity to transform the fairgrounds into a diverse urban park open to the public year-round.

The trapezoidal park site measures 400 meters long and 200 meters wide and suffered from accessibility issues due to having only one entrance/exit. To address this, we designed a ring road, complete with off-street parking, allowing visitors to access various park areas from the surrounding zones. Additionally, an 800-meter running and cycling track was established along the outer ring road. Park amenities include a sports and concert venue for 1,000 people, a multi-purpose pavilion, a covered basketball court, a skate park, retail shops, a children's playground, a civic square, and outdoor fitness equipment.

Landscape Plan

At the site entrance, a civic square is encircled by eleven Ceiba trees, the native ancestral trees of Mexico, which seem to warmly welcome every visitor. From here, the park gradually transitions into a series of streams that guide visitors between the different venues, creating a fluid, non-hierarchical circulation experience that culminates at the largest building—the sports and concert venue. Circular areas are connected by tangent arcs, forming a continuous loop that softens the site's otherwise rigid boundaries while integrating diverse functional zones into a cohesive master plan.

This project’s theme allowed us to advance a continuous biophilic design agenda within the studio, encompassing both a top-down approach—defining the master plan and transitional area design—and a bottom-up perspective focused on the user's experience of nature within the park. Furthermore, we continued to employ parametric design tools to aid our morphological exploration methods, enabling us to create architecture that possesses both aesthetic impact and structural efficiency. This process gave rise to multiple building typologies, including hyperbolic paraboloid variations tailored to the specific functions of the buildings, all featuring circular floor plans yet distinct structural solutions.

The low-density design of the building complex aims to maximize the preservation of natural green areas, a crucial consideration given the region's extremely hot and humid climate. Consequently, all materials used in the plazas and buildings are light beige tones, complementing the area's natural limestone. The lightweight metal framework used in the structures adds a sense of playful dynamism to the whole project, creating a unique sense of flow. Slender olive-green columns and undulating wooden decorative elements blend perfectly with the surrounding forest, while tiled roofs provide effective protection against heavy rains. The radially arranged building walls incorporate brick patterns, which not only enhance texture but also create vents to promote air circulation and natural ventilation. Furthermore, all buildings were designed with modularity in mind to ensure cost-effectiveness and simplify construction processes.
