The renovation of the former Yancheng Railway Station into the "China Yellow Sea Wetlands Museum" did not involve the conventional demolition of the original waiting platform. Instead, it was integrated with the museum and wetlands park to become a municipal park. Even more remarkably, a portion of it was transformed into the public area of a hotel, representing a disruptive renewal.

From Wasteland to "Check-in Point"
The deepest impression upon the initial site survey was the sense of desolation. The just-abandoned platform, with its steel columns, truss canopy, and rail elements, remained largely undamaged, as if expressing a reluctance to exit the historical stage. As part of the overall revitalization plan for the railway station area, surrounding facilities include the Wetlands Museum, Wetlands Park, a five-star hotel, and an international convention center. The Railway Park acts as a connector, closely linking these functional blocks to form a pedestrian landscape axis.

"Non-Architectural" Renovation — "Minor Plastic Surgery"
Unlike building renovations, platforms and railways belong to the category of "structures." Such "non-architectural" renovations demand a precise sense of restraint. The platform and railway are important components of urban memory, carrying the nostalgia of many people. After multiple rounds of communication with the owner and competent authorities, a design strategy of "minor modification, light intervention" gradually emerged.

The platform canopy is the main structure on site. The renovation preserved the overall components, only applying surface repainting to ensure fire and corrosion resistance. Skylights were added to the roof, which not only increased ground illumination for plant growth but also used the daylight to highlight the structural features of the trusses.

The landscape design followed the existing contours. Only the ground paving in the original platform area was replaced; the rails and sleepers were kept as they were. At the same time, diagonal walkways were implanted to closely link the two sides of the platform with the railway area. The railway area, previously only "viewable from afar," became a "Railway Park for close exploration." Two old trains were incorporated into the park, allowing citizens to enter the green-skinned vintage train interiors to check in, have coffee, and experience railway culture up close.

Relationship between small buildings and the railway
From Railway Ballast to Building Facades and Landscape Walls
After partial landscaping, how to utilize the remaining railway ballast? This project offers an innovative solution: transforming it into landscape screen walls and building elements. The walkway components use dark weathering steel plates, integrating seamlessly with the original railway sleepers. The design utilized locally sourced materials, collecting railway ballast to use in gabion walls, aiming to preserve the raw, rugged memory of the site as much as possible. A small building containing facilities like restrooms and machine rooms was added to the railway area. The two volumes are staggered, connected to the surrounding platforms and the railway landscape area by walkways. The exterior walls are constructed using gabion walls made from collected site ballast, hoping to achieve an architectural effect that appears naturally grown.

Extending from the Past to the Future — The Platform Hotel
The then-government leadership hoped that the renovation of this platform would be original and innovative, not just a simple park, but a model for the beneficial reuse of an old railway. They visited the site multiple times and proposed retaining the entire platform, with a part of it being transformed into the public area of the new hotel.

Hotel lobby reuses the platform

This idea inspired the design team, but the challenge was that the platform canopy was a temporary structure and could not be used as a building. Therefore, a new roof was designed beneath the canopy, utilizing the height difference between the new roof and the old canopy to house mechanical and electrical equipment. The new structure also became part of the interior decoration: the preserved railway elements were activated indoors; the train was converted into a restaurant; and the platform was transformed into a reception area and lobby bar, achieving an unprecedented innovation.
