Historic Hofgarten & Cappelaue Landscape Park, Öhringen, Baden-Württemberg
Spaces for the future. Building with the landscape.
Öhringen used the 2016 State Garden Show as an opportunity to launch a long-term, high-quality green and open space framework for the development of the town. Our planning for the garden show included core areas in the centre of the town as well as corresponding areas that extended far into the surrounding landscape. Using careful interventions, we reinforced the existing features of the landscape and improved and guided its use.
The tasks facing both planners and builders were incredibly diverse. The site spans the spectrum from the development of historic parkland to the restoration of a watercourse and creation of an extensive landscape park. The extensive challenges that had to be overcome by those involved with the garden show ranged from the careful reconstruction of existing garden art and the reshaping of former agricultural areas, the creation of a petting zoo and skating park, to the design of landart and construction of the Limes Gate. As a result of this development, the city of Öhringen has created urban open space that can be used and enjoyed for the coming decades.
The area of the garden show was divided into four individual areas along the course of the Ohrn river: the Hofgarten, a historic park in the town’s centre, the Cappelrain, a natural area where the river was restored to its original course, the Cappelaue, an area previously used for agricultural, and the Hofgut Cappel, where additional historic gardens are located. Three new bridges were also built to improve links to neighbourhoods along the Ohrn.
