The Zest Cafe project is located within the seasonal villa complex of Karimabad in Shahsavar, Iran; this community consistently lacked vitality due to high resident turnover and detachment from daily urban life, and existing cafes failed to become sustainable social hubs. The client's request was to transform an abandoned rental villa into a public space aimed at young people.

The core focus of this intervention goes beyond a mere change of use, centering instead on redefining the relationship between the private and the public, and integrating a socio-cultural project within a structure bearing the imprint of a residential history. This brings forth a fundamental question: How can a public space be created within a static, seasonal environment that simultaneously stimulates community social vitality and activates the potential of the existing building to sustain the new project?

Although the client's requirement was limited to traditional café functions, the design approach moved beyond this framework, aiming to create the potential for a social hub within the community; the intervention intends to generate social value and redefine the building's connection to its environment. To this end, the boundary between the café and the city was not interpreted as a solid division, but rather as a reinterpreted urban-social edge. This edge enhances the space's attractiveness by creating a biological, permeable layering that facilitates lingering, socializing, and spontaneous gathering. This strategy, rather than eliminating the boundary, transforms it into an intermediary surface that actively strengthens the café's connection to the community's daily life.

Subsequently, the traditional café function was redefined to enhance its social and cultural capacity, aiming to offer a platform for collective interaction and participatory creativity that transcends mere daily functions. In this context, two complementary elements were introduced: the Co-Creation Box, a flexible space for collaborative idea generation and participatory activities; and the Social Box, a venue for dialogue, exchange, and the formation of local social interactions. These additions are not merely functional supplements but strategic design layers that reinforce the café's social identity and solidify its role as an active social center within a seasonally static community.

Simultaneously, the spatial organization of the project was reconfigured from a centralized model to a distributed, fluid circulation pattern; this approach aims to promote spatial flow, diversity, and the user's curiosity and desire for exploration. The relative distribution of functions across the site is intended to encourage interaction, movement, and exploration across diverse layers—from social spaces to private retreats, and indoor to outdoor, open to semi-open—creating a multi-layered, dynamic experience.

Given the villa's rental status and budget constraints, the design of the new exterior shell emphasizes cost-effectiveness and refined detailing to ensure performance, structural flexibility, and scalability. On-site materials, including stored rusted scaffolding, metal tubes, mesh, and aluminum sheets, are reinterpreted as key components of the shell. This approach not only facilitates rapid and economical construction by local contractors but also functions as a multi-purpose structural and visual layering element. These additions introduce a new formal language and a layer of fresh visual identity while respecting the existing villa structure, maintaining continuity and visual cohesion within the community and avoiding the creation of an alienated or disjointed element.
